Netflix yesterday, and it\u2019s fair to say it was a <em>little <\/em>divisive.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/06\/23\/ricky-gervais-new-netflix-show-getting-torn-apart-fans-right-28891913\/\">general critical consensus was that the show<\/a>, about a grumpy, foul-mouthed cat called Gus who\u2019s trying to help a lost kitten get home, wasn\u2019t very good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Metacritic, a site that aggregates review scores, has given the show a rather paltry 39\/100.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/reviews\/alley-cats-netflix-ricky-gervais-review-b3027774.html\">The Independent<\/a> gave it one star and called it \u2018abrasive, smug, and completely mirthless,\u2019 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/tv\/0\/ricky-gervais-alley-cats-netflix-review\/\">The Telegraph<\/a> said it was \u2018abysmal\u2019 in a zero-star review.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another reviewer (who I hear is exceptionally handsome) wrote that Alley Cats was \u2018<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/08\/07\/knew-ricky-gervais-alley-cats-going-terrible-christ-29314947\/\">the televisual equivalent of a black hole of bad ideas<\/a>\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wow, powerful stuff. Courtesy of Netflix ?? 2025\" decoding=\"sync\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>They\u2019re cats and they swear some people like it.. others less so (Picture: Courtesy of Netflix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As I say, though, not everyone thought Alley Cats was complete bilge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/reviews\/alley-cats-review-ricky-gervais-netflix-1236829439\/\">Variety<\/a> wrote that it was \u2018enjoyably low-key binge\u2019 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/reviews\/alley-cats-netflix-ricky-gervais-review-b3027774.html\">The Guardian<\/a> claimed it had \u2018glimmers of potential in this <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/comedy\/\">comedy<\/a>\u2019 (although they still only gave it two stars).<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/article\/alley-cats-review-ricky-gervais-netflix-nnjzk96v8\">The Times<\/a>, the UK\u2019s newspaper of record, gave it three out of five and there\u2019s a glowing quote from Heat Magazine on the poster calling it \u2018delightful and outrageous\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s important to remember that Ricky doesn\u2019t really care about critics, as he explained during a recent live stream where he was asked what advice he\u2019d give to up-and-coming comedians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/SEI_306701882-bce7.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29250179\" alt=\"28-7-2026 First look at upcoming new TV series 'Alley Cats' Pictured: Andrew Brooke, Ricky Gervais, Jo Hartley, Diane Morgan, Tom Basden, David Earl PLANET PHOTOS www.planetphotos.co.uk info@planetphotos.co.uk +44 (0)1959 532 227\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Ricky has said he\u2019s less concerned with what critics think these days (Picture: Netflix\/Planet Photos)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sitting in front of his hoard of gleaming gold prizes and gongs, the Derek star said: \u2018When I first started out I wanted affirmation. I wanted a five-star review, and I wanted to win an award.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Actually, I didn\u2019t want to win an award, but when I did I really liked it, but I did want to get good reviews from the posh papers, as opposed to caring how many people watched it or came to the gig.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Now I\u2019d tell a young comedian \u201cdon\u2019t worry about that\u201d. It doesn\u2019t matter because they\u2019re so fickle, everyone gets a turn. They don\u2019t mean it. They judge it differently to the people you\u2019re trying to make laugh\u2026 worry about the public.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So with that in mind, did the public like Alley Cats? on <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/reddit\/\">Reddit<\/a> (which I should say has accused Ricky of getting a bit complacent in recent years), viewers were less entertained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One post titled \u2018Alley Cats is exhaustingly bad,\u2019 dannyb1996 called it a \u2018new creative low\u2019 for Ricky,
