{"id":3248,"date":"2026-07-10T21:40:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T16:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=3248"},"modified":"2026-07-10T21:40:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T16:40:06","slug":"why-hurricanes-owner-tom-dundon-including-familys-names-on-stanley-cup-is-so-controversial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=3248","title":{"rendered":"Why Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon including family&#8217;s names on Stanley Cup is so controversial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F07%2FHurricanes-Stanley-Cup.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>NHL fans are up in arms that Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon not only <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/10\/sports\/carolina-hurricanes-owner-tom-dundon-ripped-for-engraving-entire-familys-names-on-stanley-cup\/\">put his family\u2019s names<\/a> on Lord Stanley\u2019s Cup but at the top of the list.<\/p>\n<p>A maximum of 55 names are eligible to be engraved on the Cup, and owner Tom Dundon included six of his family members: his wife Veruschka and their five children Caden, Dax, Drew, Blake and Tagan.<\/p>\n<p>Those seven names, including the owner, potentially taking a spot away from some other members of the organization who were legitimately part of the team\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The names of Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon\u2019s wife and five children follow his before getting to members of the front office, coaches and players. <span class=\"credit\">@Canes\/X<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What particularly has incensed some is including members of his family who do not hold specific roles with the organization.<\/p>\n<p>The Detroit Red wings had nine members of the Ilitch family on the Cup after their titles in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008, but all served as part owners or team vice president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7434874\/2026\/07\/10\/hurricanes-owner-stanley-cup-engraving-dundon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per The Athletic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The Florida Panthers reportedly did the same last season when the Viola family had five total family members engraved on the Cup \u2013\u2013 although they all held titles, including alternate governors.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricanes do not meet such criteria with the family inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the names are engraved and fans are not thrilled about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won\u2019t be commenting as an organization,\u201d a spokesperson for the Hurricanes told The Athletic.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon holds the Stanley Cup. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The processes detailed on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/records.nhl.com\/awards\/stanley-cup\/did-you-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official NHL website<\/a>\u00a0describe eligibility requirements for engravings, and it appears\u00a0there were inconsistencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA player is required to have appeared in at least 41 regular-season games with a team, or one Stanley Cup Final game, to be eligible to have his name engraved on the trophy. In 1994, a stipulation was added to allow a team to petition the Commissioner for permission to have players\u2019 names put on the Stanley Cup if extenuating circumstances prevented them from being available to play. The management staff engraved on the trophy is determined by the team. However, it must be approved by the Hockey Hall of Fame and NHL.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hockey Hall of Fame (HHOF) responded to an email <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7434874\/2026\/07\/10\/hurricanes-owner-stanley-cup-engraving-dundon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from The Athletic<\/a> on the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHockey Operations at the league (NHL) office in Toronto signs off on the names that go on the Stanley Cup. What a self serving prick.
