(Perez Hilton is seen above.) <span class=\"credit\">Perez Hilton\/YouTube<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The source said that Hilton\u2019s close circle fears the gossip writer (above) is suffering from post-sepsis psychiatric disorder.  <span class=\"credit\">Perez Hilton\/YouTube<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Clinical and forensic psychologist\u00a0Dr. Andrew Mendonsa exclusively told Page Six Friday that sepsis survivors and other life-threatening illnesses can \u201chave psychological and cognitive difficulties that continue well after the immediate medical crisis is over.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can include depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, sleep problems, fatigue, difficulty concentrating or remembering things, and sometimes changes in mood or behavior,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>However, Mendonsa cautioned that not all people who have had sepsis will develop a mental health condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people recover without significant psychological problems. It just means there is a meaningful group of survivors who do struggle afterward,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hilton was hospitalized in March for sepsis (seen above).  <span class=\"credit\">theperezhilton\/instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hilton (seen here in March) said he got sepsis when he took flu medication on an empty stomach.  <span class=\"credit\">theperezhilton\/instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mendonsa also noted that he is unable to determine whether Hilton\u2019s sepsis contributed to his mental health scare, as he doesn\u2019t have enough information about Hilton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never evaluated him, I have not reviewed his records, and I don\u2019t know everything that was happening in his life at the time. So I can\u2019t say that his sepsis caused or contributed to the reported self-harm,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSelf-harm and suicidal behavior are usually much more complicated than a single event or explanation,\u201d he continued. \u201cThere can be medical, psychological, social, environmental, and situational factors interacting with one another.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The University of California professor believes it would be fair to question whether his illness and recovery could be \u201cpart of the larger picture.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hilton (seen here in March) was hospitalized for three weeks during his sepsis battle.  <span class=\"credit\">theperezhilton\/instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hilton (seen here in March) was back in the hospital a month later for a blood clot.  <span class=\"credit\">theperezhilton\/instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhat we can\u2019t responsibly do from the outside is conclude that the sepsis caused the incident,\u201d he said. \u201cThat would require an actual evaluation and much more information than we have publicly.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Hilton, born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/22\/celebrity-news\/perez-hilton-hospitalized-after-mysterious-health-scare\/\">was hospitalized <\/a>for three weeks in March after<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/23\/celebrity-news\/perez-hilton-reveals-medical-emergency-that-landed-him-in-hospital\/\"> taking flu medication on an empty stomach. <\/a>Hilton explained that he \u201cdeveloped an ulcer and then a perforation and then sepsis.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sepsis is a life-threatening condition in which the body\u2019s extreme response to an infection can damage organs, cause dangerously low blood pressure and lead to death if not treated quickly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/sepsis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Mayo Clinic. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy stupidity landed me in the hospital for 21 days.
