(Seriously!) The always incredible Emmy Rossum stars as an FBI agent who stumbles onto a string of deaths cunningly executed by a young woman (Lola Petticrew) \u2014 who has good reason to target the victims she does. There\u2019s a lateral amount of weirdness here compared to its parent series, with inspired voice performances from both David as well as series regulars Jim Rash and Stephanie Beatriz, and the show functions perfectly well as a standalone series. So if you enjoy animated anarchy, it\u2019s worth a peek. However, the execution is fresh, heartfelt, and funny thanks to creator Megan Park, who translates the same nuanced qualities of her previous film\u00a0<i>My Old Ass<\/i>\u00a0to a whole new dynamic. Look past that issue, and you\u2019ve got a pretty classic rom-com in the vein of\u00a0<i>While You Were Sleeping<\/i>\u00a0(with less coma), as Anna falls in love with the Italian countryside as well as the extended family of Matteo (Lorenzo de Moor), the quasi-stranger she\u2019s \u201caccidentally\u201d lied about being engaged to. Good thing Matteo doesn\u2019t have any hot relatives\u2026 oh wait, is that Reg\u00e9-Jean Page? Is he taking his shirt off in the middle of a vineyard? Uh oh! This isn\u2019t a perfect romantic comedy, but it\u2019s got plenty of cute moments, and there\u2019s an added bonus of food porn to boot.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Blast From the Past<\/h2>\n<p><i>The home screens of streaming services are always packed with the latest new releases, but we don\u2019t spend enough time appreciating how much good library content is streaming across all of these platforms. There\u2019s also Timothy Olyphant making a huge impression as a drug dealer who loathes\u00a0<i>The Family Circus<\/i>\u00a0\u2014 a\u00a0<em>formative<\/em>\u200b performance for many people of a certain generation. Director Alysa Nahmias focuses on four girls who are different ages and at different levels of selling: One wants to break her record from last year (which was in the thousands) while another just wants to sell enough boxes to win a free bandana.<\/p>\n<p>During a press junket, I spoke with Alysa as well as one of the Scouts featured: Nikki (pictured above) was nine years old while filming, and wanted to win a trophy for her selling efforts the way her older sister once did. The movie received a standing ovation at Sundance as well as heaps of critical acclaim; Alysa credits the positive audience response in part to the fact that one in three American women were Girl Scouts at one point in their life, and they\u2019re \u201cfeeling like they\u2019re seeing that experience reflected. It\u2019s been fun to feel that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nikki herself felt that, remembering her reaction to seeing the movie for the first time. \u201cI was like, okay, so they\u2019ve been filming me for a while. I just can\u2019t wait to see how it turns out. And when I first watched it, I was like, this is going to mean a lot to a lot of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Alysa says, \u201cseeing girls like Nikki and her sisters, who are allowed to be ambitious, sometimes even cutthroat and competitive, but are also allowed to be vulnerable and tender\u2026 Those are the kinds of coming-of-age stories that really move people. Girl Scout or not Girl Scout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>What Do They Recommend?<\/b> Alysa mentioned that while she was working on <i>Cookie Queens<\/i>, she looked at a number of scripted movies for inspiration, including a few that are VOD-only like Wes Anderson\u2019s <i><b>Moonrise Kingdom<\/b><\/i> and the remarkable Iraqi film <i><b>The President\u2019s Cake<\/b><\/i>. In the streaming realm, though, she recommended Sean Baker\u2019s <i><b>The Florida Project<\/b><\/i> (HBO Max) as well as Celine Sciamma\u2019s <i><b>Petite Maman<\/b><\/i> (Kanopy, Tubi), which \u201cI really loved for its multi-generational dynamics, and the way it was shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nikki, meanwhile, recommended the <i><b>Enola Holmes<\/b><\/i> movies (Netflix). \u201cThey\u2019re about this girl who\u2019s really curious, which has a nice connection to <i>Cookie Queens<\/i> because all the girls, they\u2019re not going to give up. That\u2019s basically what the girl is doing in that movie. She was curious and looking out for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thank you so much to Alysa and Nikki for their picks! <i>Cookie Queens<\/i> is in theaters now, and believe me, I\u2019ll be sure to mention it here when it starts streaming.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">One Last One Before Bed<\/h2>\n<p><i>Finally, let\u2019s spotlight a movie or TV show that\u2019s not only great, but won\u2019t take up too much of your time: Think of this section as the answer to the question \u201cWhat\u2019s something I can watch before hitting the hay, that won\u2019t keep me up too late?\u201d The only rule is that it has to be less than 95 minutes if it\u2019s a movie, or less than 30 minutes an episode if it\u2019s a TV show. So let\u2019s bring both things together with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MY15_rcd-IQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">this incredibly fun animated short<\/a>\u00a0originally produced as backstory for John Mulaney\u2019s character in\u00a0<i>Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Caught in a Ham<\/i>\u00a0quickly speeds through Peter Porker facing off against a not-so-intimidating nemesis, only to then shift to some\u00a0<i>Duck Amuck<\/i>-inspired antics. The story then continues into\u00a0<i>Into the Spider-Verse<\/i>\u00a0\u2014 one of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/list\/spider-man-movies-ranked-best-worst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the best Spider-Man movies ever made<\/a>\u00a0(if you ask us here at\u00a0<i>Consequence<\/i>, that is). You might have seen this one before, since it\u2019s been out for a few years.
