It cannot be resolved at the state level,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I am sure that there will be robust representation from the\u00a0DSA ring of the party, whatever you want to call it. I\u2019m sure there\u2019ll be a robust number of candidates from what I would call the governing wing of the Democratic Party, but you call it what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He asserted again that this is a matter of politics that must be decided by the base of the party itself.<\/p>\n<p>The 2028 primary promises to be a crowded contest, with figures ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/01\/us-news\/aocs-favorables-dive-even-as-new-hampshire-tempts-her\/\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/06\/us-news\/gavin-newsom-recruits-supporters-to-spread-campaign-messages-in-family-group-chats\/\">Gavin Newsom<\/a> to Pete Buttigieg to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/31\/us-news\/kamala-harris-teases-potential-2028-platform-i-know-this-is-going-to-be-controversial\/\">Kamala Harris<\/a> to Rahm Emanuel among those expected to vie for the nomination.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leaves the US Capitol on July 22, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAnd this can\u2019t be solved through op-ed pieces, it can\u2019t be solved through cable TV network packages, panels, it can only, and that\u2019s the way it should be, that the Democrats themselves have got to settle on the direction of their party, and they\u2019re going to have all the options, and we\u2019ll see just how popular this is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When later asked about what would happen if the\u00a0democratic socialist wing\u00a0takes power, he repeated his past prediction that there will have to be a \u201cschism\u201d in the official party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to let Democratic voters determine the direction the party goes in, and if it goes in the direction of \u2014 I\u2019m pretty confident it won\u2019t, but if it goes in that direction, then I\u2019m going to be 82.
