font-size: 17px;\">Last year, Kennedy directed the Food and Drug Administration to investigate revising its Substances Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) rule, which allows companies to <strong>bypass traditional government notification and review.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"word-break: break-word; font-size: 17px;\">The GRAS designation was intended to allow <strong>common food ingredients<\/strong>\u2014like vinegar, flour, baking soda or standard spices\u2014to bypass safety reviews and become available to all food manufacturers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"word-break: break-word; font-size: 17px;\">But companies have been taking advantage after FDA created what is known as the \u201c<strong>GRAS loophole<\/strong>,\u201d allowing a company to self-certify its ingredients were GRAS, and then <strong>voluntarily inform<\/strong> the FDA that it had done so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"word-break: break-word; font-size: 17px;\">FDA is expected to propose, as early as Monday, making <strong>notification of GRAS submissions mandatory <\/strong>for most substances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;font-size:12px;mso-line-height-alt:18px\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;font-size:12px;mso-line-height-alt:25.5px\"><span style=\"word-break: break-word; font-size: 17px;\">The proposed rule <strong>cleared the White House regulatory review <\/strong>last week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"word-break: break-word; font-size: 17px;\">\u201cFor far too long, ingredient manufacturers and sponsors have exploited a loophole that has allowed new ingredients and chemicals, <strong>often with unknown safety data,<\/strong> to be introduced into the U.S. food supply without notification to the FDA or the public,\u201d Kennedy said in March 2025 when he directed FDA to revise the rule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"word-break: break-word; font-size: 17px;\">The proposal represents a significant effort by the Trump administration to take a food safety goal championed by Kennedy\u2019s <strong>Make America Healthy Again movement <\/strong>and turn it into regulatory action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"word-break: break-word;
