He wrote that the “relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary” had taken a toll on him and his family, while insisting the decision should not be read as “an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me.”

The resignation came the same day Cambridge issued a new statement saying it had “begun an investigation following new information about” Mr. Arday’s “academic qualifications and honorary appointments.” Jesus College said separately it would conduct its own inquiry. Cambridge did not specify what the new information was.

The reversal marked a sharp break from Cambridge’s earlier statement, issued just three days before, which said allegations of plagiarism in Mr. Arday’s thesis and journal work had already been “investigated by Liverpool John Moores University and the journals in question.” Liverpool John Moores, which awarded Mr. Arday’s 2015 doctorate, previously examined plagiarism claims tied to his dissertation and attributed the issues to “honest and reasonable error,” according to Al Jazeera.

The allegations burst into public view last month after a Substack post by Nathan Cofnas, a philosopher now at the University of Ghent in Belgium who previously held a Leverhulme fellowship in Cambridge’s Faculty of Philosophy. Emmanuel College, where Mr. Cofnas was also a research associate, terminated that affiliation in 2024 amid a separate controversy over his writings on race and academic merit; a university disciplinary inquiry into the matter cleared him in December 2025, finding no breach of law or university policy. Mr. Cofnas said he ran Mr. Arday’s dissertation and later papers through the plagiarism-detection tool Copyleaks and found extensive unattributed overlap with other scholars’ work, including a 2009 dissertation by Brunel University researcher Paula Zwozdiak-Myers.

“I found extensive plagiarism,” Mr. Cofnas told CBS News. Two academic journals, Social Sciences and Educational Philosophy and Theory, later issued corrections adding citations to Mr. Arday’s work, though neither retracted the papers.

Mr. Cofnas told Fox News Digital he believed Mr. Arday “was hired by Cambridge to be the face of DEI,” a claim echoing arguments he has made that the university’s diversity efforts shielded Mr. Arday from scrutiny. (Fox News Digital did not provide a resolvable link to that report, so it isn’t hyperlinked here.)

A Retraction Watch investigation reported that Times Higher Education had a similar story in the works as early as September 2025 but shelved it after Mr. Arday retained the defamation firm Carter-Ruck, which sent the publication a legal letter. The outlet reported that internal Cambridge emails showed administrators were alerted to plagiarism concerns as early as 2023 but declined to investigate work published before Mr. Arday’s arrival on campus.

Beyond the plagiarism claims, Mr. Arday’s personal biography has come under separate scrutiny. He has said he was nonverbal until age 11, did not learn to read or write until 18, and later completed a doctorate and running feats including 30 marathons in 35 days. Critics, including Mr. Cofnas, have questioned aspects of that account, though Retraction Watch noted it is “impossible to prove or disprove” the biographical claims without further evidence. Mr. Arday’s forthcoming memoir, “Great and Unfortunate Things,” had been scheduled for publication by Simon & Schuster this month.

This article was constructed with the assistance of artificial intelligence and published by a member of The Washington Times’ AI News Desk team.
