That\u2019s the question that\u2019s been whispered throughout the newsletters all week, first by<b> Brian Stelter<\/b> in Reliable Sources, so it might as well be addressed.<\/p>\n<p>The answer, it seems, is a solid\u2026 maybe.<\/p>\n<p>If Carlson runs, it doesn\u2019t seem he\u2019ll do so under the GOP banner (and he\u2019s definitely not running as a Democrat). What that could mean for Republicans remains to be seen. It <i>appears<\/i> Carlson has been using his platform to promote the idea that the United States might need a third party, but, as our writers have noted all week, he\u2019s also used it to float plenty of conspiracy theories and promote a few antisemitic whackadoodles to boot.<\/p>\n<p>The possibility of a Carlson White House run has not yet broken out of right-wing media, but that doesn\u2019t mean it won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">THREE TAKES<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/7\/popout?ver=135ea4odo4bhy&amp;search=inbox&amp;th=%23thread-f%3A1872816567485069356&amp;cvid=9&amp;mc_cid=c8eeede8a0&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Free Press<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Douglas Murray<\/strong>\u2014Murray took a look at the 10-point manifesto\u00a0 Carlson laid out on Wednesday to detail Everything That Is Wrong With The United States. The trouble, Murray said, is that Carlson won\u2019t fully commit. He seemed to suggest the formation of some kind of third party, which would be made up of\u00a0\u201can\u00a0<em>Avengers<\/em>-style team consisting of Tucker, former representatives\u00a0<strong>Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Thomas Massie<\/strong>, former counterterrorism director\u00a0<strong>Joe Kent<\/strong>, and some of their spouses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carlson believes America \u201cmust pursue\u201d 10 qualities: \u201cfairness, sovereignty, productivity, beauty, health, honesty, optimism, wisdom, decency, and unity.\u201d As Murray put it, \u201cthese are slogans that are meant to be unopposable.\u201d And, sure, who wouldn\u2019t agree? He also failed to stop President\u00a0<strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>\u00a0from going to war with Iran, despite many White House visits, and his behavior became so erratic that Vice President\u00a0<strong>JD Vance<\/strong>\u00a0started to \u201clook like another tool of the same hawkish Republican establishment that had scorned Carlson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\">But Carlson has a plan! \u201cLike Donald Trump after descending the golden escalator in 2015, Carlson depicts America as crisis-ridden and badly broken \u2014 but fixable, if voters choose the right candidate,\u201d Sommer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson\u2019s speech didn\u2019t really lay out a plan, but it does prompt a question about how \u201ca guy nowadays best known for talking about demons and for cozying up to Vladimir Putin might go about setting up a run for the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/7\/popout?ver=135ea4odo4bhy&amp;q=tucker%20carlson&amp;qs=true&amp;qid=F3CEF953-9B6F-4554-80C6-EC338F1A8328&amp;aqid=B1D949C9-E641-4908-8206-CBD6D14AA15C&amp;cmembership=1&amp;search=query&amp;sortop=1&amp;silk=8CE4D6A7-67E1-45F9-B96F-53E7811F2546&amp;th=%23thread-f%3A1872872755591192809&amp;qt=carlson.1.carlson%27s.1.tucker.1.tucker%27s.1.tuckercarlson.1&amp;cvid=13&amp;mc_cid=c8eeede8a0&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Bulwark\u2019s Morning Shots<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Bill Kristol and Andrew Egger<\/strong>\u2014The Bulwark\u2019s band of intrepid authors offered a second Carlson take this morning, and pointed out what is very likely a real truth: all of us are \u201cgoing to be hearing a lot more from Tucker in the days and weeks to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_1559159768668505005mcePastedContent\">Some of that messaging will come from Greene, who posted ominously on social media this week: \u201cThe movement has begun.\u201d A lot is going on within the movement, potentially a blend of \u201ctypical MAGA and MAHA impulses\u201d and \u201cpopulist attacks on the sort of open corruption and foreign adventurism Trump has embraced\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5174368971465723675mcePastedContent\"><strong>TAKEAWAY<\/strong>: While a Carlson \u201ccampaign\u201d may seem may seem a little far-fetched, it\u2019s also clear from this week\u2019s stack that we should be keeping an eye on him. And that\u2019s the one thing I can\u2019t do. I\u2019m going to ask them to. \u2026 The question is, will they vote? Banikarim spoke to \u201ca number\u201d of the paper\u2019s journalists who described the layoffs as \u201cchaotic,\u201d adding, \u201cThe way they were handled was cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who lost their jobs included the newspaper&#8217;s top editors, something that \u201csuddenly really left us with no plan and no leadership and no idea how we\u2019re going to get the paper out,\u201d another editor told Banikarim. Former Transportation Secretary\u00a0Pete Buttigieg\u00a0\u201cstayed neutral in the Senate primary to make it easier to bring people together after what we knew would be a long campaign,\u201d a source told Playbook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s why he\u2019s already rallying for the ticket to show strength and unity going into the general election,\u201d that source added. He also wrote, \u201cThis rumor was started by The Washington ComPost, one of the worst Media Outlets in the business, despite our telling them their story is completely FALSE. Which is actually pretty fun. Owens reflected on the success of The Gist, which was launched by\u00a0<strong>Ellen Hyslop<\/strong>\u00a0back in 2017 with a group of co-founders. At the time, \u201cnone of them had worked in media or the sports industry,\u201d Owens wrote, but things have changed. The Gist tapped into fans who had \u201cgrown frustrated with a sports media ecosystem that largely catered to men while overlooking millions of potential female fans\u201d and now has more than 1 million subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Owens also took a look at The Bulwark\u2019s success on YouTube, where the conservative-yet-anti-Trump outlet has more than 140,000 paid subscribers.
