We laugh and we just\u2026 it\u2019s a very healthy thing, and it was very healthy for our kids,\u201d the Spanish actor <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/antonio-banderas-says-he-and-ex-wife-melanie-griffith-are-best-friends-exclusive-12035767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told People<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf [Griffith] is not my best friend, [she is] one of my best friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Antonio Banderas\u00a0still considers ex-wife Melanie Griffith (pictured together above in 2013) his best friend \u2014 more than a decade after their divorce. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The actor told People Tuesday that he and his ex (seen above together in 2012) have a \u201cvery healthy\u201d dynamic that is great for their kids. <span class=\"credit\">Frazer Harrison<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The \u201cMask of Zorro\u201d star also revealed the secret to remaining on such good terms with his ex over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing is, when we were a couple, when we separated, we were always very sincere,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe came out of our relationship in a nice way that was very important for [the kids] and for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also praised the \u201cWorking Girl\u201d actress for being \u201can unbelievable mother\u201d to their children, whom he says are \u201cblossoming and becoming good people.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>As for how the former couple (pictured above together at the \u201cHaywire\u201d premiere in 2012) remain on such good terms, Banderas said it\u2019s because they are always \u201csincere\u201d with each other. <span class=\"credit\">Lumeimages \/ SplashNews.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>He also praised the actress (pictured here together in 2000) for being \u201can unbelievable mother\u201d to their children. <span class=\"credit\">MediaPunch \/ Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Griffith and Banderas met on the set of the 1995 rom-com \u201cTwo Much\u201d and married the following May in London.<\/p>\n<p>During their marriage, the former couple welcomed their daughter, Stella.<\/p>\n<p>They also successfully became a blended family as Griffith had three other children from previous marriages, most famously daughter Dakota Johnson, whom she shares with two-time ex-husband Don Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 2014 Griffith <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2014\/06\/06\/griffith-and-banderas-divorce-after-drifting-apart-for-years\/\">filed for divorce<\/a> and the two announced their split in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Griffith and Banderas (seen above at the 1995 \u201cDesperado\u201d premiere) met on the set of the 1995 rom-com \u201cTwo Much\u201d and married the following May. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The duo (pictured in 2000) welcomed a daughter, Stella, and Banderas became a stepfather to Griffith\u2019s three children from previous marriages. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost-20-year marriage in a loving and friendly manner, honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Their divorce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2015\/12\/08\/melanie-griffith-and-antonio-banderas-divorce-finalized\/\">was finalized<\/a>\u00a0in December 2015, a year and a half\u00a0after Griffith originally filed.<\/p>\n<p>Banderas <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2014\/12\/31\/meet-antonio-banderas-new-young-girlfriend\/\">moved on from their marriage<\/a> soon after their split. He has been with girlfriend Nicole Kimpel since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>As for Griffith, she has not been in any public relationships since Banderas.
