Lamont Quarker, a department spokesman, said no business has ever been denied permission to open because it chose not to participate in the program.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Quarker said officers walk business owners through how the technology works, explain what police can and cannot access, and outline the privacy protections in place before owners decide whether they want to opt in.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Department spokesman Capt. Lamont Quarker said no business has ever been blocked from opening because it declined to participate. <span class=\"credit\">Facebook\/@RialtoPD<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOur experience has been that once business owners better understand the program, many choose to participate because they recognize the public safety benefits,\u201d Quarker said, adding the city is considering changing its policy so businesses would only be required to discuss the program with police, while participation would remain voluntary.<\/p>\n<p>Quarker defended Fusus as a modern extension of long-standing partnerships between police and local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis technology has helped officers identify suspects, locate fleeing offenders, recover evidence, and respond more effectively to incidents involving violent crime and threats to public safety,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pasadenastarnews.com\/2026\/08\/06\/rialto-police-make-late-night-tv-thanks-to-cameras-wienerschnitzel-and-a-days-inn-pool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Pasadena Star-News<\/a>. \u201cAccess to real-time information can reduce response times, improve officer safety and better protect victims and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Comedian John Oliver blasted the Rialto Police Department on HBO\u2019s \u201cLast Week Tonight\u201d over its surveillance policies, including a requirement that certain businesses give police access to their security camera feeds. <span class=\"credit\">Axon 911<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He pointed to one armed robbery in which officers arrested fleeing suspects just 15 minutes after they took off from a gas station, a response he credited to camera feeds that were already available to police.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver also mocked the department after his show requested Fusus records and received a 30,413-page paper printout instead of a searchable digital file, wheeling six boxes of documents onto the stage for laughs.<\/p>\n<p>Quarker acknowledged the paper production was a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile that intention was well-meaning, it was not the appropriate response,\u201d he said. \u201cThere was no attempt to conceal, alter or withhold data.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>But Quarker said Oliver\u2019s conclusion was based on a misunderstanding of the logs. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/@rialtopolice<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After converting the records into a searchable database, Oliver said the logs showed police accessing cameras inside fast-food restaurants, including employee-only areas, and at a Rialto Days Inn, including one overlooking the pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you worked at the Chick-Fil-A there, just know that on one Tuesday afternoon, Rialto had five of your interior cameras open for two hours straight,\u201d Oliver said. \u201cWhich feels a little weird to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also joked that \u201cgetting secretly watched in your swimsuit is not supposed to be one of the perks of staying at a Days Inn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Quarker said Oliver\u2019s conclusion was based on a misunderstanding of the logs.<\/p>\n<p>According to the captain, the records reflected camera feeds that were simply available on department monitors, not officers actively watching them for hours at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason we maintain this passive monitoring is straightforward: during an emergency, seconds matter,\u201d Quarker said, explaining officers can lose up to 90 seconds locating the right camera during a fast-moving emergency.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Comedian John Oliver took a swing at a Southern California police department on HBO \u2014 and the cops wasted little time responding.
