According to the National Retail Federation (NRF) per\u00a0<em>10 News<\/em>, parents of K-12 students are expected to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsls.com\/news\/2026\/08\/03\/back-to-school-spending-ticks-up-to-just-over-863-on-average-for-families-with-students-in-k-12-survey-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spend an average of $146.45\u00a0<\/a>on traditional school supplies this year, including essentials like notebooks, pencils, folders, and binders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that\u2019s only part of the bill. Once you add in clothing, shoes, backpacks, and electronics, the average family is expected to shell out $863.86 per K-12 student for the 2026-2027 school year\u2014a slight increase from $858.07 in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news? Families don\u2019t have to shoulder those costs alone. According to the website, \u201cThe event includes free school supplies, including backpacks, as well as family activities, a bounce house, raffles\u201d and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re not sure where to start, another easy option is to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/211.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dial 211 or visit 211.org.\u00a0<\/a>The free service connects families with local charities and community organizations offering backpack giveaways, school supply drives, and other back-to-school assistance based on your ZIP code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families in New York City also have several opportunities to score free school supplies. The New York Restoration Project<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrp.org\/en\/get-involved\/free-backpacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0will distribute backpacks and classroom essentials<\/a>\u00a0at several community gardens and green spaces across the boroughs. Bronx giveaways are scheduled for Aug. 15 at Mildred T.
