Last month she announced she had helped lift a desegregation mandate for the rural Concordia Parish School Board along the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt\u2019s long past time for these old consent decrees to come to an end. These decades-old cases are expensive, ineffective, and they take power away from local communities,\u201d Murrill said on <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AGLizMurrill\/status\/2085458875810259137?s=20\">social media.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The U.S. Justice Department spent decades fighting for such cases but <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/school-segregation-order-civil-rights-justice-department-7fc5e2e4ef8e9ad4a283f563c042ae7c\">reversed course<\/a> under Trump. Officials in his administration have framed the remaining segregation orders as federal intrusion into local school systems. Louisiana officials agree they\u2019re no longer needed and describe them as relics of a time when Black students were forbidden from attending some schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Bossier Parish Schools order said the parents who filed the original suit in 1964 that led to the oversight agreement are dead and that their children, who were part of the original court proceedings, couldn&#8217;t be contacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The school system said it worked for decades with the Department of Justice, collaborating with its lawyers over \u201cevery new school, classroom wing addition and attendance zone change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Rowland thanked past board members and employees for doing everything the system needed to do to get out from the intense federal monitoring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The superintendent said he trusts district leadership to make sure everyone in the system is treated fairly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BOSSIER CITY, La. &#8212; A Louisiana school board and the federal government have agreed to end more than 60 years of oversight meant to end segregation.
