{"id":30847,"date":"2026-08-07T07:59:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T02:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=30847"},"modified":"2026-08-07T07:59:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T02:59:32","slug":"tiny-toad-big-discovery-new-ice-age-amphibian-found-in-la-brea-tar-pits-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=30847","title":{"rendered":"Tiny toad, big discovery: New ice age amphibian found in La Brea Tar Pits collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>Researchers in Los Angeles have made a <i>ribbiting <\/i>new discovery at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum \u2014 an extinct amphibian from the ice age.<\/p>\n<p>The spadefoot toad, or <i>Spea labreae<\/i>, is one of only two  ice age amphibians  to have been found in the U.S. The other is an extinct species of tree frog in Florida, according to the museum\u2019s news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the toad may be much smaller than the mammoths and saber-toothed cats that made the Tar Pits famous, this discovery has a big impact on our understanding of the climate at the end of the last ice age,\u201d the news release read.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of the spadefoot toad was made two years ago but published recently in the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/02724634.2026.2689465\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology<\/u><\/a> and marks one of several discoveries made at the Samuel Oschin Global Center for Ice Age Research at the La Brea Tar Pits, where the  museum is undergoing renovation.<\/p>\n<p>Unearthing the spadefoot toad wasn\u2019t the result of a targeted search \u2014 it happened by accident, much like many of history\u2019s greatest finds.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Alberto Cruz, the lead author, was reviewing the rarely studied collections of amphibians and reptiles as a postdoctoral fellow at the La Brea Tar Pits when he noticed an amphibian that looked different from the others.<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, he thought he was looking at a specimen that had been sick or injured  rather than a new species. He then compared the collection with the 80 specimens at the Herpetology Collection at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at the University of Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought: \u2018Oh my gosh, this is a new species,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThis material is originally from the 1950s, but when you study it again, you can find gold in these specimens. It\u2019s very cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say amphibians provide a window into the past because they don\u2019t travel far during their lifetimes and are sensitive to climate change. When their fossils are discovered, it helps scientists piece together how local environments changed over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you change the environment, you change the vegetation, the climate is warmer or colder, it affects these animals directly,\u201d Cruz said.<\/p>\n<p>The miracle behind Cruz\u2019s discovery is that amphibians such as frogs, toads and salamanders rarely make it into the fossil records because of their fragile skeletons.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Lindsey, curator and excavation site director at the La Brea Tar Pits\u2019 center, said the discovery of the ice age toad is an example of the ongoing discoveries being made at the museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s definitely more to come,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Also detailed in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology is the first record of another amphibian: the Mexican burrowing toad \u2014<i>Rhinophrynus<\/i>. The species, which still exists,  once inhabited the Southwestern region including Los Angeles.
