Dhillon of the DOJ&#8217;s Civil Rights Division said in a news release. \u201cUsing \u2018diversity\u2019 essay questions to identify preferred races for admission is still illegal discrimination based on race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Affirmative action in college admissions has been illegal <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-affirmative-action-college-race-f83d6318017ec9b9029b12ee2256e744\">since a 2023 Supreme Court ruling<\/a>. The same ruling said colleges could continue to assess how applicants\u2019 backgrounds might speak to broader characteristics, but President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused colleges of using other proxies to maintain racial diversity, which conservatives view as illegal discrimination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The department recently found that the medical schools at Yale University and the University of California, Los Angeles, illegally considered race in admissions. It announced in June that it was launching similar investigations into 15 other medical schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Trump administration previously targeted <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-administration-lawsuit-higher-education-race-8b3a50026922cc78d9ca3d7c52b93acb\">undergraduate admissions<\/a> at selective colleges, demanding they collect data to show they are complying with the Supreme Court ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In its findings against Duke Law, the DOJ said Black or Hispanic applicants were much more likely to be admitted than white or Asian applicants with the same academic credentials.
