Layoff plans continue to be announced primarily in tech, and artificial intelligence is still the story, as investments in the technology reshape organizations,\u201d Andy Challenger, workplace expert and chief revenue officer for Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHiring has also increased over last year by 25%, so while AI is shifting the labor market, it is not dismantling it.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>So far this year, AI has been cited in 112,713 job cut announcements \u2013 including 10,970 in July, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2023, when Challenger started tracking <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/02\/business\/ai-pushes-2026-tech-layoffs-past-50k-and-counting-employers-say\/\">AI as a distinct reason for layoffs,<\/a> the new tech has been linked to 184,538 job cuts.<\/p>\n<p>In July, technology was the sector with the most job cuts, announcing 9,867 layoffs for a total of 149,023 so far this year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Employers announced plans to hire 16,095 workers in July, according to the report. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s 67% more layoffs than the same period last year and just under a third of all job cuts in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTech remains the center of gravity for this year\u2019s cuts, and AI is still the reason companies give,\u201d Challenger said.<\/p>\n<p>Financial firms, government agencies, services, health care, transportation and media also saw significant layoffs in June, the firm said.<\/p>\n<p>Challenger also said hiring has picked up, after companies halted taking on new employees as they feared economic shocks from President Trump\u2019s tariffs and the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter inline-module--nypostbusinessunit aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\" data-source-unit=\"Inline Newsletter Module Morning Report\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Employers announced plans to hire 16,095 workers in July \u2013 47% higher than the previous month and much higher than last July\u2019s 3,200 new hires.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the highest hiring total for July since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, companies have announced plans to hire 107,500 workers \u2013 up 25% from the same seven-month period last year and the strongest total since 2023, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Aerospace and defense industries led hiring plans in July. Technology and automotive industries have also seen most of the hiring this year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release its official jobs report on Friday. <span class=\"credit\">snowing12 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEmployers are hiring more than they were at this point last year, which bucks the trend we\u2019ve seen since 2020,\u201d Challenger said. \u201cThe demand is showing up in aerospace, energy, and manufacturing, work that happens on a floor rather than a screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Challenger\u2019s report is just a collection of hiring plans, not official government data.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release its official jobs report on Friday morning, and economists expect it will show a boost in hiring after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/02\/business\/us-employers-add-57k-jobs-in-june-as-hiring-continues-at-a-healthy-clip-though-rate-cut-hopes-fall\/\">June\u2019s surprisingly slow month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>June\u2019s nonfarm payroll employment is estimated to jump by just 83,000 \u2013 an increase from 57,000 the previous month.
