{"id":30420,"date":"2026-08-07T00:09:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T19:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=30420"},"modified":"2026-08-07T00:09:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T19:09:33","slug":"only-murders-in-the-building-goes-global-but-keeps-new-york-soul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=30420","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Only Murders in the Building\u2019 Goes Global But Keeps New York Soul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tO<em>nly Murders in the Building <\/em>showrunner John Hoffman wouldn\u2019t mind if the show went on forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe true-crime comedic mystery, starring Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, nabbed five Emmy nominations for its fifth season, including one for outstanding comedy series \u2014 a nod it\u2019s received every year since its first season in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cMany people have asked, \u2018How long are you going to stay with that show?\u2019 \u201d Hoffman tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Until they want to stop.\u2019 No one\u2019s doing anything without me because I just love this group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cEach season, there has always been that drive in me to say, \u2018No, we\u2019ve done that.\u2019 \u2018No, that\u2019s not fresh,\u2019 or, \u2018That thing doesn\u2019t subvert,\u2019 \u201d Hoffman continues. \u201cAll of that comes up, so I just keep pushing that way just naturally as a writer and director however I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor season six, Hoffman and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/only-murders-in-the-building\/\" id=\"auto-tag_only-murders-in-the-building_1\" data-tag=\"only-murders-in-the-building\">Only Murders in the Building<\/a><\/em> creative team are pushing the story overseas to London, a risk for a show whose niche and clever conceit is also conveniently its title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhether the show could survive traveling to a wholly different backdrop had been an obstacle Hoffman had wanted to tackle since early in the series\u2019 run, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s no way around a certain understanding of needing to freshen up a show. I mean, how many murders can be in one building?\u201d Hoffman says. \u201cIt felt like the right time. I love the idea of however we can broaden the reach of the show and put the trio in new situations, new landscapes for a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor five seasons of the critically acclaimed show, its titular building and the New York City skyline have been critical to its DNA. In upping the ante for its sixth season, Hoffman says the team knew it was important to keep that tone and spirit in the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s no question it\u2019s a New York show, even as we jump to London for an entire season,\u201d Hoffman says. \u201cIt\u2019s been really interesting to look at the show anew in this way after five seasons and yet also see what we can hold on to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe spirit of the show and the center of it and the emotional hook and how it feels, surprisingly, still feels like our show, and there isn\u2019t a shift that takes us out too much,\u201d he adds. \u201cSo that part is always the driving force, wherever the case takes them, whether it\u2019s New York or some other place. I will happily report that London has been incredible for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOne way the show has always managed to keep things fresh is by adding new guest stars to the cast and giving them plenty in the script to play with. Jane Lynch, Nathan Lane, Paul Rudd, Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph, Matthew Broderick and Meryl Streep have all been nominated for past guest roles on the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe next time Short, Martin and Gomez appear onscreen, they\u2019ll be joined by iconic British film and TV actors, including David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, Jim Broadbent, Martin Freeman and Olivia Colman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI watch the show get deeper, richer, funnier, crazier and just marvel at it and then watch everyone else come aboard and sink into an ensemble when they\u2019ve been the stars of their own things,\u201d says Hoffman. \u201cThey find their way here and they\u2019re brilliant, elevating your material and everything else around them, and the vibe around the set changes and, boy, I would not say no to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>This story first appeared in an August stand-alone issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
