{"id":29271,"date":"2026-08-06T02:18:37","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T21:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=29271"},"modified":"2026-08-06T02:18:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T21:18:37","slug":"ending-hamass-existence-remains-the-only-agreement-worth-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=29271","title":{"rendered":"Ending Hamas\u2019s existence remains the only agreement worth making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twt-thumbs.washtimes.com\/media\/image\/2026\/08\/05\/B3loeschLGendhamas_s796x929.jpg?d1334dda806c26a9ba3e13256c4663ffa945324d\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-category\"><strong>OPINION:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/white-house\/\">White House<\/a> announced what it described as a \u201chistoric\u201d agreement for the \u201ccomplete disarmament\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> and other armed groups in Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Except it\u2019s not a complete disarmament.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> has only said that it would place some of its weaponry in a sort of terror escrow, managed by the corrupt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/palestinian-authority\/\">Palestinian Authority<\/a>, while it will retain much of its large-scale weaponry \u2014 and this is only contingent upon the creation of a Palestinian state, something the group has repeatedly rejected since it assumed control of the Gaza Strip in 2006.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/palestinian-authority\/\">Palestinian Authority<\/a> itself is one election away from being overrun by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a>, whose popularity has surged, particularly in Judea and Samaria, even after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/october-7th\/\">October 7th<\/a>. After all, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> won a surprise majority (74 of 132 seats) during the territories\u2019 last legislative election and previous 2018 polling showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> leader Ismail Haniyeh nearly 10 points ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/palestinian-authority\/\">Palestinian Authority\u2019s<\/a> President Mahmoud Abbas. Not much has changed. Municipal elections held in April of this year showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> was still the most popular political entity amongst Gazans and Palestinians in Judea and Samaria.<\/p>\n<p>The governing body, as identified in the draft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> disarmament agreement, would eventually be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/palestinian-authority\/\">Palestinian Authority<\/a> \u2014 after an indeterminate interim period in which allies of said authority would govern as technocratic stewards. So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> would reassume control after friends of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> stewarded the strip for the short term. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is just another containment trap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You cannot negotiate with a terror group that includes within its very charter its outright rejection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel\u2019s<\/a> right to exist, and you can\u2019t expect a group that views its weapons as central to its very identity to disarm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>What\u2019s more, you can\u2019t \u201cnegotiate\u201d with a group that sanctioned the tying of women to trees and raping them to death. You can\u2019t negotiate with a group that sliced the breasts off of its innocent victims, that forcibly sodomized men in public with found objects, that broiled babies in the ovens of family kitchens while ransacking the neighborhood, that murdered parents in front of their children, that committed atrocities so demonic that it traumatized an entire nation and to a less immediate extent, the world at large.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I visited southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> last week. I saw the hollowed-out homes still being rebuilt. I ate lunch in Sderot down the road from the destroyed police station that was so overrun with entrenched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> terrorists on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/october-7th\/\">October 7th<\/a> that the IDF had to eventually bomb it into rubble.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I walked amongst the eucalyptus and pine trees in the Re\u2019im Forest, site of the Nova Festival massacre on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/october-7th\/\">October 7th<\/a>, and spoke with one of the survivors. The sheer number of signs memorializing the 378 people murdered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a>, each printed with a photo of the victim and details about who they were, is overwhelming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the bomb shelter where Aner Shapira and his friend Hersh Goldberg-Polin holed up with over 25 other Nova attendees fleeing the carnage. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> tried bombing them out of the shelter, firing rocket-propelled grenades into the opening, only for Shapira and Goldberg-Polin to throw them back. One ultimately exploded in Shapira\u2019s hands, killing him. The pair is credited with saving lives. Seven survivors lived by hiding amongst the bodies in the shelter after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> took four as hostages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I asked Ilay David, brother of hostage survivor Evyatar David, \u201cWhile your brother was in captivity, did anyone, anyone at all, try to help him? Was anyone at all kind to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer to both was \u201cno.\u201d It\u2019s a common refrain from all hostage survivors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> murdered 1,200 people in one day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not going to tell another nation what it should do to protect its borders or its people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I do know how the United States would respond if cartels in Mexico brutally executed the per capita equivalent of 40,000 Americans in a single day, a figure that is 13 to 14 times the per capita loss of the 9\/11 attacks. No one could restrain the fury of the United States\u2019s response \u2014 and no one would dare try. It would be entirely, wholly, unequivocally justified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> how to react, but I will encourage our leaders in D.C. to do only this: Let them act. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> knows what it needs to do and has the capability to do it. What it doesn\u2019t need is to be dragged into the indulgence of more circular containment nonsense \u2014 the exact type of cautionary, empathetic suicide that helped create the environment for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/october-7th\/\">October 7th<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel\u2019s<\/a> efforts to please the cowards, the pacifists, the geopolitical illiterates, the couch crusaders of the world are getting its own people killed. Real allies understand when a nation needs to act to eradicate threats and protect its own people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Believing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/hamas\/\">Hamas<\/a> wants a truce is the same fatal error as believing they were contained prior to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/october-7th\/\">October 7th<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> loose.
