But on this night, we have made the use of protection mandatory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Wait a minute: condoms are <em>mandatory<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">They are. In the world of <em>One Night Only<\/em>, you can and will be arrested for having sex without using a condom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Specifically a condom?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Do birth control pills and IUDs not exist in this universe?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">They might, but nobody in <em>One Night Only<\/em> ever mentions them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>And how do the authorities know if you\u2019re using a condom?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">No idea; it\u2019s never explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Could it be that this rule exists only to catalyze a sequence where both Turner and Barbaro\u2019s characters go on a desperate quest to find a condom, conveniently bringing them to the same bodega at the same time and allowing for a second meet-cute\u2014and also so the movie can engage in a little Durex product placement?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That\u2019s the most likely explanation, yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Isn\u2019t there a Jennifer Love Hewitt movie with almost this exact same premise?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There is, and it\u2019s called <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trojan_War_(film)\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trojan_War_(film)&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trojan_War_(film)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Trojan War<\/em><\/a>. Don\u2019t tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/story\/the-odyssey-christopher-nolan-changes-from-homer?srsltid=AfmBOopGYIxC9hKGk-OAWui9WhDuJ5qHJO67vk78UxmYxuRFMlguxwfq\" class=\"text link\">Emily Wilson<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>So single people can\u2019t have sex in this world. But married people can have all the sex they want?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That is correct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Could two people get around the mandate by getting married to each other, then having sex with other people who are also technically married to other people?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">You\u2019d think, right? But nobody in the movie ever raises this possibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Could a person just get serially married and divorced every time they want to have sex?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There\u2019s no reason to think they couldn\u2019t, although if the government is fervently pro-marriage, they\u2019re presumably not so hot on divorce either. But again, none of this is ever addressed in the movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Is infidelity also illegal? What about swinging? Open marriages?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">No clue! Maybe all this will be tackled in a sequel called <em>Two Nights Only<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><strong>Couldn\u2019t people just go to another country, have sex there, then return to the US?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Apparently yes!
