CEO of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, told Fox News Digital Monday that the experiment is failing in multiple areas.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;So what we&#8217;re seeing, particularly in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_media_article_main-content_article-body_6_341605\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/northeast\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York<\/a> and Seattle, are proposals to having the government actually artificially lowering prices by using their general revenue funds to make those groceries \u2018more affordable,\u2019 The state looked at that here in Illinois and dismissed it because it&#8217;s inherently flawed,&#8221; It is owned by Amazon.com<\/span> <!----><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">In the article, Nicole Huyer, a free-market policy analyst, said the closures underscore the shortcomings of government-backed solutions.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The outlet also reported that the stores, managed by retail platform Yellow Banana, closed after Save A Lot terminated its operating agreement with the company, pointing to financial challenges that included a significant decrease in SNAP purchases.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The Whole Foods in Chicago\u2019s Englewood neighborhood, which closed in 2022, received a significant government subsidy, relying on an <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_media_article_main-content_article-body_6_341610\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/as-whole-foods-prepares-to-leave-englewood-it-prepares-to-open-new-river-north-store\/2824033\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">$11 million<\/a> Tax Increment Financing (TIF) subsidy from the City of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">When it closed, <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_media_article_main-content_article-body_6_341611\" href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2022\/05\/02\/whole-foods-announces-it-s-checking-out-englewood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">local outlet WTTW reported<\/a> that State Rep. So, Illinois has the second-highest <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_media_article_main-content_article-body_6_341613\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/finance\/taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">property taxes<\/a> in the nation,&#8221; Hill said. &#8220;They&#8217;re even higher in Chicago. Commercial property here is taxed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bomachicago.org\/assets\/pdf\/BOMA+Chicago+Cook+County+Property+Tax+Reform+Submission+Material\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">250% more<\/a> than residential property, which makes it tougher for businesses to operate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;So, property taxes are out of control, which affect business margins as well,&#8221; Hill added. &#8220;But on top of that, for consumers and for businesses, Chicago&#8217;s total <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_media_article_main-content_article-body_6_341615\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/economy\/taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sales tax<\/a>, which also applies to groceries, was just at an increase on August 1st. So the total sales rate in the city is now <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_media_article_main-content_article-body_6_341616\" href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoispolicy.org\/press-releases\/regional-transportation-authority-sales-tax-hike-pushes-chicagos-burden-to-10-5-second-highest-in-the-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">10.5 percent<\/a>. It&#8217;s the second highest of any city in the nation. But when you look at grocery stores, what are your permitting processes? What are your licensing processes? What are your <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_media_article_main-content_article-body_6_341618\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/economy\/regulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">labor mandates<\/a>? What&#8217;s going on in your property tax? When you look at the city of Chicago and Cook County, we have the classification system where commercial and industrial carry two-thirds of the burden. That&#8217;s a problem.
