Chuck Edwards, R-N.C. has said he is dropping his bid for re-election, days after the House Ethics Committee recommended censure over sexual harassment allegations. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e54e20\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cAfter much prayer and reflection, I\u2019ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term,\u201d Edwards<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepChuckEdwards\/status\/2084905422482178109\" target=\"_blank\"> announced early Wednesday in a post on X<\/a>. \u201cServing Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6621d5\" class=\"body-graf\">Edwards, 65, had faced mounting pressure over his conduct with two female staffers. He has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4728af\" class=\"body-graf\">On Monday,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/ethics-panel-recommends-censure-gop-rep-chuck-edwards-inappropriate-co-rcna590649\" target=\"_blank\"> the ethics panel said it was recommending that the full House censure Edwards<\/a> after it found that he \u201cengaged in persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers.\u201d A censure is a formal disapproval by the House.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ada710\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe Committee found that Representative Edwards violated the House Code of Official Conduct by failing to adhere to the spirit of rules prohibiting sexual harassment of and unwanted advances to House staffers,\u201d the Ethics Committee said in its <a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Committee-Report-8.3.26.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">25-page report<\/a> following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/house-ethics-investigating-sexual-harassment-allegations-chuck-edwards-rcna345191\" target=\"_blank\">monthslong investigation<\/a> into allegations against him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a77d0a\" class=\"body-graf\">The bipartisan panel said Edwards denied that any of his actions were intended to be sexual or romantic in nature. He cooperated with the investigation, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9aa3b0\" class=\"body-graf\">The committee said it found no evidence that Edwards engaged in sexual activity with or propositioned any of his staffers. It also concluded that the allegations \u201cdo not implicate quid pro quo sexual harassment\u201d or violate \u201cthe \u2018letter\u2019 of federal sexual harassment law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-97db18\" class=\"body-graf\">But the panel added that \u201chis pattern of behavior would lead a reasonable observer to interpret it as such, including providing the young women with lavish and recurrent gifts, making comments regarding their appearance and dress, inviting them to intimate dinners and vacations, sending notes regarding his effusive affection, and inviting them to other activities as a way to spend time together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-85dcdf\" class=\"body-graf\">Edwards has not been in Congress long. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-17b747\" class=\"body-graf\">A former state lawmaker, he ousted Rep. Madison Cawthorn in the GOP primary in 2022 but kept a low profile on Capitol Hill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2022-election\/hot-mess-madison-cawthorn-faces-judgment-day-north-carolina-rcna27906\" target=\"_blank\">unlike his predecessor<\/a>, before the ethics probe.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9f4a15\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">Edwards previously called the allegations \u201cbaseless\u201d and said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/house-ethics-investigating-sexual-harassment-allegations-chuck-edwards-rcna345191\">statement to NBC News in May <\/a>that he welcomed an investigation. His counsel wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Appendix-B-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">15-page rebuttal<\/a> to the committee\u2019s findings, calling them \u201cunfounded.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
