{"id":28557,"date":"2026-08-05T12:56:36","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T07:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=28557"},"modified":"2026-08-05T12:56:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T07:56:36","slug":"apple-show-repeats-past-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=28557","title":{"rendered":"Apple Show Repeats Past Mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ted-lasso-season-4-jason-sudeikis-tanya-reynolds.jpg?quality=80\" \/><\/p>\n<div data-id=\"1616038\" data-title=\"Ted Lasso Season 4 Doesn\u2019t Learn from the Past\u2019s Mistakes: Review\" data-url=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/08\/ted-lasso-season-4-review-jason-sudeikis\/\" data-page=\"1\" data-pages=\"1\">\n<p>Well before the <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/tag\/ted-lasso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Ted Lasso<\/i><\/a> Season 3 finale dropped in 2023, the idea of a Season 4 was in the air. <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2022\/06\/ted-lasso-brendan-hunt-interview-season-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speaking to <i>Consequence<\/i> back in 2022<\/a>, star\/executive producer <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/tag\/brendan-hunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brendan Hunt<\/a> confirmed that the story could continue after the show\u2019s original three-season arc was completed, and as the prophecy foretold, slowly but surely <a href=\"https:\/\/tv.apple.com\/show\/ted-lasso\/umc.cmc.vtoh0mn0xn7t3c643xqonfzy?itscg=30200&amp;itsct=tv_box_link&amp;mttnsubad=umc.cmc.vtoh0mn0xn7t3c643xqonfzy&amp;at=1001l36gv&amp;ct=tedlasso*season4review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Apple TV<\/a> managed to drag back (some of) the original cast for the next chapter.<\/p>\n<p>The new season focuses on Ted Lasso (<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/tag\/jason-sudeikis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason Sudeikis<\/a>) returning to England to coach for AFC Richmond. This time, though, he\u2019s coaching the relatively new women\u2019s team. The Lady Greyhounds are weighed down by many of the issues facing women\u2019s sports today, from a lack of resources compared to the men\u2019s team to the general public assumption that women\u2019s sports aren\u2019t important. However, despite the shaky financial future of the endeavor, Ted\u2019s specific brand of optimism endures, and may well lead his new team to victory.<\/p>\n<p>The world today may feel very different than it did in 2023, but <i>Ted Lasso<\/i> remains in many ways tonally identical to what came before, aided and abetted by the returning characters. Rebecca (<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/tag\/hannah-waddingham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hannah Waddingham<\/a>) still happily manages the Richmond organization with the help of loyal Higgins (Jeremy Swift), and remains best friends with Keeley (Juno Temple), who has adopted the women\u2019s team as her primary focus. The men\u2019s team itself largely remains off-screen in the first five episodes, so no familiar faces pop up there, but Roy Kent (<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/tag\/brett-goldstein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brett Goldstein<\/a>) is around as their coach, as is Ted\u2019s BFF Coach Beard (Hunt).<\/p>\n<p>Related Video<\/p>\n<p>Another consistency: The show\u2019s episodes are also nearly as long as they were in Season 3, stretching out comfortably into the 45-47 minute range. By comparison, <i>Law and Order: SVU<\/i> episodes clock in at 41-42 minutes these days, which means it takes Ted longer to solve a squad issue than it does for Olivia Benson to solve a sex crime.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do the runtimes stretch out, but the season opens not in England but in Kansas City, with a full episode spent catching up with Ted as his former Richmond colleagues convince him to return to London. The show does make great use of the opportunity to turn the tables on the Brits and douse <i>them<\/i> in some culture shock, leading to Rebecca developing a love-hate relationship with KC BBQ. However, it\u2019s a drawn-out introduction built on the premise that we don\u2019t already know what Ted\u2019s decision will ultimately be \u2014 of course he\u2019s going back.<\/p>\n<p>Once there, he throws himself into understanding the nuances of women\u2019s soccer, assisted by less-than-perky assistant coach Alice, played by Tanya Reynolds. Reynolds is one of those performers who\u2019s proven to be a true chameleon while also delivering distinctive characters in projects like <i>Sex Education<\/i> and <i>Emma.<\/i> \u2014 in short, a top-tier character actress. Her commitment to Alice\u2019s surly demeanor is absolute, though it\u2019s unclear how the show intends to evolve her at this stage in the season.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ted Lasso \u2014 Season 4 Official Trailer (Together) | Apple TV\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GACU1N9hg5o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Faye Marsay, recently seen working for the Rebellion in <i>Andor<\/i> and investigating a horrible crime in <i>Adolescence<\/i>, also stars as one of Richmond\u2019s new star players, but her character is largely defined by being a mum. In fact, most of the team is defined by quick shorthand and\/or their relationship to others: the lesbian couple, the sisters, the law student, the slightly deranged goalie who refuses to wear gloves. (Okay, the goalie\u2019s name is Boots, she is played by Jude Mack, and she might be my favorite new character on the show.) As it did in introducing the original men\u2019s team, the show has the potential to explore these new players in greater detail, but so far the show hasn\u2019t found much opportunity to do so. (Despite those runtimes.)<\/p>\n<p>The season also features some awkward shenanigans around Keeley and Roy\u2019s relationship, which we learn has remained in a holding pattern for the past three years. The choices made to keep that tension in a \u201cwill they or won\u2019t they\u201d area only prove frustrating \u2014 anyone who remembers the disastrous <i>Sports Night<\/i> \u201cdating plan\u201d will find themselves pulling out their hair here.<\/p>\n<p>When <i>Ted Lasso<\/i> premiered in August 2020, there was no question that its sunny optimism was exactly what people needed at that time. Yet the first season was filled with friction points, from Rebecca\u2019s determination to ruin the team (just like in <i>Major League<\/i>!) to the battles between the massive egos in the locker room.<\/p>\n<p>Soon enough, though, much of that conflict melted away for a story about good people doing their best together. A nice show about nice people, unfortunately, doesn\u2019t have a lot of narrative momentum, especially when most episodes conclude with relatively simple solutions to the problems that occur.<\/p>\n<p>This was a problem that emerged in the third season and continues in Season 4, meaning that these new episodes feature plenty of high points but definitely feel overly familiar as opposed to fresh \u2014 more of the same, without enough evolution on the past. Coach Lasso would be the first to encourage one of his players to try something new, challenge themselves.
