class=\"celebrity-tag-link\"><strong class=\"celebrity-tag-strong\">Wizards Beyond Waverly Place<\/strong><\/a><\/em> finale delivered a big shocker to audiences \u2013 one of the characters is dead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of season two, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justjared.com\/2025\/10\/08\/wizards-finale-shocker-selena-gomez-gets-spoiler-amid-major-twist-in-disney-channel-series\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.justjared.com\/2025\/10\/08\/wizards-finale-shocker-selena-gomez-gets-spoiler-amid-major-twist-in-disney-channel-series\/\">suspected that <strong>Selena Gomez<\/strong>\u2018s Alex Russo had died<\/a>, but fans quickly speculated that there was no way she was actually gone, and she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justjared.com\/2025\/10\/08\/did-alex-russo-really-die-in-wizards-beyond-finale-david-henrie-teases-future-seasons\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.justjared.com\/2025\/10\/08\/did-alex-russo-really-die-in-wizards-beyond-finale-david-henrie-teases-future-seasons\/\">perhaps went into a different dimension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the finale event that premiered Tuesday night (August 4) on Disney Channel, it was revealed that one of the characters actually was dead.<\/p>\n<figure data-id=\"https:\/\/www.justjared.com\/2026\/04\/16\/gregg-sulkin-to-reprise-wizards-of-waverly-place-role-in-sequel-series-finale-event\/\">confirmed<\/a> earlier this year that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justjared.com\/tags\/gregg-sulkin\/\" class=\"celebrity-tag-link\"><strong class=\"celebrity-tag-strong\">Gregg Sulkin<\/strong><\/a> would reprise his role as Mason Greyback, but in the finale, we learn that he is dead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the episode, we see Alex reuniting with alternate versions of BFF Harper (<strong>Jennifer Stone<\/strong>) and Mason. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Viewers see that Alex is excited over Mason proposing to her, and urges him to get down on one knee, but he clarifies that that is not why he returned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can\u2019t propose to you. And you know why. Think about it. This isn\u2019t how it\u2019s supposed to be. Why can\u2019t I propose to you?\u201d he asks her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you\u2019re dead. You\u2019re gone. That\u2019s why all of this feels weird, it\u2019s not real,\u201d Alex replies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explains that he was there to help get her back to her family, and that she\u2019s not meant to be dead yet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a new interview, star and executive producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justjared.com\/tags\/david-henrie\/\" class=\"celebrity-tag-link\"><strong class=\"celebrity-tag-strong\">David Henrie<\/strong><\/a> opened up about the decision to kill off Mason in the time between the original series and his return. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe always wanted to bring Mason back, but it\u2019s a double-edged sword any route you choose,\u201d he told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvline.com\/2230526\/wizards-beyond-waverly-place-mason-death-explained-gregg-sulkin\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tvline.com\/2230526\/wizards-beyond-waverly-place-mason-death-explained-gregg-sulkin\/\">TVLine<\/a><\/em>. \u201cLet\u2019s say they broke up, fans would be furious because they were the \u2018best relationship ever.\u2019 You know, how could you break them up and then have her go with a different guy? That doesn\u2019t make any sense. And then why do we even bring him back? So it was a double-edged sword, and the cleanest version was to kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>David<\/strong> also addresses the mystery surrounding Mason\u2019s death, which isn\u2019t explained on the show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLook, he was an old werewolf, and werewolves pass on,\u201d he said. \u201cMaybe he didn\u2019t get enough moonlight, I don\u2019t know. He passed on, but he will always have a special place in [Alex\u2019s] heart, and he actually got to contribute to this story in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe totally understood it, he totally got it,\u201d <strong>David<\/strong> added, noting that<strong> Gregg<\/strong> was okay with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He shares his longtime friend and co-star said, \u201cYeah, it would be tough if you kept me in the picture.
