Joined by Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Joseph Doyle, and Michael Buckley, she delivered an ethereal and deeply affecting rendition of the track, which originally appeared on her album, <em>All of This Is Chance<\/em>. Before beginning, O\u2019Neill shared the song\u2019s backstory, recalling how Hansard gave her the keys to an apartment in Dublin with soaring ceilings, where she went on to write <em>All of This Is Chance.<\/em> His advice, she said, was: \u201cLet your imagination grow in this big space and write songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hansard arrived at the cathedral in a horse-drawn hearse, with his wicker coffin carried shoulder-high into the church by family members. The coffin was topped with flowers and photographs of Hansard with his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, their three-year-old son Christy, and his late mother, Catherine.<\/p>\n<p>Related Video<\/p>\n<p>During the service, Saaritsa thanked the Garda\u00ed and first responders who came to Hansard\u2019s aid following his <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/07\/glen-hansard-dead-motocycle-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">motorcycle accident<\/a>. She then read an early poem she had written for her husband, beginning and ending with the words, \u201cCome to me with beauty. I require it to stay alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traditional Irish music was woven throughout the ceremony. The service opened with the Irish-language hymn including \u201cCr\u00edost Liom,\u201d \u201cPort na bP\u00faca\u00ed\u201d \u2014 which means music of the ghosts \u2014 and \u201cThe Auld Triangle.\u201d The latter, which Hansard frequently performed, was played as mourners left the cathedral in a communal fashion.<\/p>\n<p>During O\u2019Neill\u2019s performance with Hansard at MacGowan\u2019s funeral in December 2023, the pair were backed by members of The Pogues and later performed <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2023\/12\/glen-hansard-fairytale-of-new-york-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFairytale of New York,\u201d<\/a> eventually bringing mourners to their feet to dance in the church aisles.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neill was among numerous musicians who participated in Hansard\u2019s funeral. <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/08\/eddie-vedder-marketa-irglova-glen-hansard-funeral\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eddie Vedder and Mark\u00e9ta Irglov\u00e1<\/a> performed \u201cThe Song of Good Hope,\u201dDamien Dempsey sang \u201cSing All Your Cares Away,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/08\/bono-glen-hansard-funeral\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bono<\/a> played a lullaby recorded by Patti Smith before reciting lyrics from U2\u2019s \u201cBeautiful Day.\u201d The service concluded with Vedder, \u00d3 Maonla\u00ed, and many of Hansard\u2019s friends and collaborators leading a rendition of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cForever Young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hansard <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/live-coverage\/glen-hansard-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died early on July 29th<\/a> following a motorcycle crash outside Dublin. He was 56 years old.
