This battle also isn\u2019t one that\u2019s especially new to the Democratic Party, which has struggled to balance its progressive and centrist branches for years, if not decades.\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\">A potential El-Sayed win is cautiously, tentatively being seen as a\u00a0<em>harbinger of genuine change<\/em>. Michigan is a deeply purple state with a lot of interests, but it\u2019s possible El-Sayed has found a way to unite most of them. Today\u2019s stack indicates that\u2019s scary to the right, but it\u2019s something that\u2019s sparking whispers of hope for the progressive left.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">THREE TAKES<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billoreilly.com\/b\/The-Godfather-of-Communism\/456822465670637867.html?mc_cid=223522f8fc&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.billoreilly.com\/b\/The-Godfather-of-Communism\/456822465670637867.html?mc_cid%3D223522f8fc%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1785947564823000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Xrw9PNfFSdNbyOslelGIO\"><strong>My Message of the Day<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Bill O\u2019Reilly<\/strong>\u2014Sanders, aka \u201cThe Godfather of Communism,\u201d looms large over the state\u2019s Senatorial primary, O\u2019Reilly insisted this morning. As such, he\u2019s been dutifully monitoring the proceedings, having appeared \u201con all the social media shows\u201d where he \u201cblathered about the Marxist Mayor of New York, oligarchs, and\u00a0<strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>.\u201d For O\u2019Reilly, it\u2019s\u00a0<em>one big snoozefest<\/em>: \u201cYou know the routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sanders\u2019 most egregious goal right now is\u2026 wait for it\u2026 \u201cfree and universal childcare,\u201d something that\u2019s being pushed by NYC\u2019s Mayor\u00a0<strong>Zohran Mamdani\u00a0<\/strong>(and other communist \u201czealots\u201d) to the tune of $13 billion per year (that\u2019s O\u2019Reilly\u2019s math). \u201cSanders won\u2019t articulate his ideology, but here it is: He wants the government to raise our kids,\u201d O\u2019Reilly wrote. \u201cThat\u2019s what they have in China. Parents don\u2019t rear the urchins; the Communist Party does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2026\/08\/04\/the-lefts-bern-notice-01023515?mc_cid=223522f8fc&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2026\/08\/04\/the-lefts-bern-notice-01023515?mc_cid%3D223522f8fc%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1785947564823000&amp;usg=AOvVaw16Oalj-AhkVemMhuWTErqr\"><strong>POLITICO Playbook<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Will Steakin, Adam Wren, and Dasha Burns<\/strong>\u2014Michigan\u2019s primaries might be\u00a0<em>doom and gloom for the GOP<\/em>, but the \u201cleft wing\u201d of the Democratic Party is \u201cfeeling something it hasn&#8217;t since Bernie Sanders ignited the movement in 2016: real momentum,\u201d POLITICO\u2019s trio wrote today. A win by El-Sayed, which looks increasingly likely, will send the progressive faction \u201con course for the political stratosphere,\u201d something that will absolutely spark \u201cspeculation about where that firepower is aimed heading into 2028.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\">But there\u2019s a problem: there aren\u2019t enough progressive candidates to surf the wave, and it\u2019s also unclear if Rep.\u00a0<strong>Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong>\u00a0or Rep.\u00a0<strong>Ro Khanna<\/strong>\u00a0will inherit the Sanders mantle. \u201cIt\u2019s<em>\u00a0not certain AOC will even run for president<\/em>, and right now just Ro is really out there trying to fill that lane. That leaves a pretty thin field to pull from,\u201d an insider told POLITICO\u2014and others the party supports (eg, Mamdani) aren\u2019t eligible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/home\/post\/p-209674427?mc_cid=223522f8fc&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/substack.com\/home\/post\/p-209674427?mc_cid%3D223522f8fc%26mc_eid%3DUNIQID&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1785947564823000&amp;usg=AOvVaw19HDiRZAFlPwrtOEydFyJh\"><strong>The Bulwark<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Sarah Longwell<\/strong>\u2014The results of the state\u2019s primary will be decided by Michigan\u2019s voters, Longwell noted today, and the Stevens\/El-Sayed debate is one that is \u201cpitting Democratic voters\u2019\u00a0<em>heads against their hearts<\/em>.\u201d This has led Longwell to ponder whether \u201cthe heart is pulling away.\u201d To answer her question, Longwell turned to focus groups The Bulwark spoke to in April, June, and July. The groups were made up of people who voted for\u00a0<strong>Kamala Harris\u00a0<\/strong>in 2024 and plan to vote in today\u2019s primary race. Those voters represented the head and heart debate well. Stevens fits the \u201dtough-Midwestern-gal archetype that Michigan Democrats are familiar with,\u201d but her \u201ccorporate influence\u201d is cause for concern. El-Sayed\u2019s Medicare for All\u2014a mainstay of the Sanders-led DSA ideology\u2014is a major plus for the healthcare professional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\">Longwell noted she believes \u201ctalk of a \u2018Democratic civil war\u2019 is overdone, but cautioned that an El-Sayed win will \u201ckick off a\u00a0<em>whole lot of finger-pointing and recriminations<\/em>\u00a0among the Democratic chattering class, and some voters as well.\u201d That\u2019s not limited to him\u2014if Stevens wins the primary but loses the election, the same thing will transpire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5174368971465723675mcePastedContent\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">TAKEAWAY:<\/span><\/strong> Progressive\u00a0<em>Democrats have been here before<\/em>, and could even be understandably a little wary of the advent of yet another changemaker candidate. But messaging born from Sanders and disseminated through leaders like El-Sayed and Mamdani is working, even among voters in Michigan who like Stevens. Despite O\u2019Reilly\u2019s fear, we\u2019re seeing over and over again that when political leaders follow through on their campaign promises and establish policies that support their constituents, they\u2019re coming out on top\u2014something Mamdani has so far proven. If Michigan\u2019s voters want Medicare for All, they might just get it\u2014and they might even inspire the nation to shoot for the same in 2028 (a realization of the fight Sanders has waged nationally since at least 2016). On Saturday, Bilton launched a 734-word \u201cwelcome back memo\u201d to the show\u2019s staff, a totally normal and not at all \u201cturbulent start\u201d to his tenure, Darcy revealed. Bilton made sure to offer a \u201cgenuine thank you\u201d to some returning from vacation, and told the rest: \u201cFor the rest of you, I hope you&#8217;re well rested and excited to get back to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\">Bilton\u2019s note included a bit of \u201chousekeeping\u201d (he\u2019s done away with the dry-erase story board and installed a digital version instead) before he addressed the real reason for the message: those leaks. Bilton emphasized he\u2019s annoyed by \u201cthe unrelenting speculation regarding the show, along with the torrent of unauthorized information making its way into the press.\u201d He insisted there\u2019s been \u201ca rumor a day\u201d since he took over, and he\u2019s tired of it: \u201cI no longer have the time or the patience for them, and I&#8217;d rather we spend that energy on the stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2596be\">ANALYSIS<\/span><\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f440.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udc40\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em;max-height: 1em\" \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/7\/?mc_cid=223522f8fc&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID#search\/morning+shots\/FMfcgzQhVhgGxtlMmLBVgwRVfRFWkNvW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Morning Shots<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Bill Kristol and Andrew Egger\u2014Donald Trump<\/strong>, aka \u201cPresident Spaceman,\u201d has been moving in \u201cstranger than usual\u201d patterns this week, Egger observed. Though he\u2019s always lived in \u201ca world defined by his own personal information bubble of yes-men and online fans shouting his praises,\u201d\u00a0<em>the president appears more out of sync<\/em>\u00a0with the rest of us than ever before. That\u2019s evidenced by his stance on the war in Iran, and his insistence, \u201cAmerica is forever on the verge of total victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\">But, obviously, that\u2019s not the case. Despite the president\u2019s weekend Truth Social proclamation that we\u2019re on the brink of a deal that will lead to the \u201cImmediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,\u201d Iran has insisted there\u2019s<em>\u00a0no deal on the table<\/em>, and in fact announced the country is coordinating with Oman to establish joint control of the strait (\u201cexactly the opposite, in other words, of what Trump claimed\u201d). That might have led to a presidential-sized \u201ctantrum,\u201d but Trump\u2019s propensity for crashouts doesn\u2019t make his preferred reality the one the rest of us live in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_9185792176099109396mcePastedContent\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2596be\">ANALYSIS<\/span><\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f440.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udc40\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em;max-height: 1em\" \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/7\/?mc_cid=223522f8fc&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID#search\/the+free+press\/FMfcgzQhVhdzMKDnZtKJvqNzxXhcxPtB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Free Press<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Seth M. Siegel<\/strong>\u2014Cyberattacks that hit water systems in at least seven states should be a cause for concern, Siegel wrote today.
