A gain of just 0.13% on the day would put the index at a new closing record high, surpassing its previous closing peak on June 2.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsepoimb00063b6r2iq9irbx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stocks got a boost and oil prices fell after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC early Tuesday that he thinks a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/04\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-trump?post-id=cmset4nbg000i3b6x1maz0npw\">could happen today or tomorrow.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsepscfp000i3b6ruyksm0cf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traders leaned in to Bessent\u2019s comments, although it remains to be seen how tensions between Washington and Tehran develop. Efforts to resolve the conflict are \u201cin very progressive stages,\u201d Qatar\u2019s Foreign Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/04\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-trump?post-id=cmsekz33g001i3b6tc6v1hv3s\">said Tuesday<\/a>. Traders have been closely watching shipping traffic out of the Strait of Hormuz to gauge whether oil flows are resuming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseo33lg00023b6r7vln7d8f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow soared 900 points, or 1.7%, extending gains into record territory after closing at an all-time high on Monday, its first since July 6. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 2%, and is less than 3% away from its last record high set in early June.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseo3pga00093b6rgq92f2aq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The S&amp;P 500\u2019s return to record highs would mark the culmination of a two-month swoon that saw the index drop almost 5% from its recent peak before bouncing around and resuming its climb. All told, the S&amp;P 500 was always relatively close to record highs this summer. But heightened nerves about AI fueled bouts of market anxiety.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseo3uxg000c3b6rraqjq3jf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Nasdaq in late July was down almost 10% from its recent peak, nearing a so-called correction. After a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/02\/investing\/stocks-memory-ai-boom\">stunning rally<\/a> earlier this year, semiconductor chipmakers dropped sharply while investors were selective about other tech stocks, putting pressure on the market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseoz35a000f3b6rn6rz1hte@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sharp single-day swings and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/23\/business\/stock-market-kospi-dow-nasdaq-ai\">extraordinary volatility<\/a> in South Korea also highlighted the risk of markets being heavily concentrated in one theme like AI. Still, investors monitored earnings and stepped in to buy the dip on some Big Tech and software stocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseo3uxg000d3b6rkzqvqylp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the Dow on Monday closed above 53,000 points for the second time ever. The Dow and S&amp;P 500 are at record highs while the Nasdaq lags because investors are looking to other sectors of the stock market besides just technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseo3uxg000e3b6rrfz8tb62@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Across the past three months, the healthcare and financial sectors \u2013 which the Dow has strong exposure to \u2013 have outperformed technology. Still, tech is the third-best performing sector across that time, and the Nasdaq is up more than 4% already this week, playing catch up with the other indexes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseo3uxh000f3b6r8sjlba7x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tech has been the leader this year, with the AI boom dominating the stock market as investors\u2019 favorite theme. The company raised its forecast for annual revenue growth because the AI data center buildout is boosting demand for its construction and power equipment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseoqavg000a3b6r6pudtr80@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wall Street is in the midst of quarterly earnings. As of July 31, about 61% of companies in the S&amp;P 500 had reported earnings, with 86% of those companies reporting a positive surprise on earnings per share, a measure of profitability, according to FactSet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseo4cej000m3b6rxswsmp0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the whole, companies\u2019 earnings growth is proving robust, with a blended measure the combines results and estimates on pace for the highest earnings growth rate in five years, according to FactSet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsep8x62000q3b6rty7uzimt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Investors on Tuesday afternoon will receive SpaceX\u2019s first-ever quarterly earnings as a public company. SpaceX shares rose 4% Tuesday to $119 but are below the company\u2019s IPO target price of $135 a share.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmseorfui000l3b6ryv2hvsmi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oil prices fell Tuesday, helping to ease nerves about inflation. US Treasury yields fell, pulling back after soaring last week.
