{"id":27518,"date":"2026-08-04T17:06:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T12:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=27518"},"modified":"2026-08-04T17:06:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T12:06:47","slug":"this-onstage-fight-broke-up-the-eagles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=27518","title":{"rendered":"This Onstage Fight Broke Up the Eagles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It&#8217;s not unusual for rock bands to have creative tensions, but few bands take it to the limit quite like the <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/the-eagles\/\">Eagles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Why Did the Eagles Break Up?<\/h3>\n<p>The &#8217;70s superstars broke up in 1980 after two of the band members actually threatened each other with physical violence onstage in front of a concert audience.<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles were already struggling with a great deal of internal turmoil due to the pressure to follow up their career-changing 1976 album <em>Hotel California<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The sessions for the subsequent album, <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/the-eagles-the-long-run-story-behind-the-album\/\"><em>The Long Run<\/em><\/a>, dragged on interminably and resulted in an uneven album, and by the time they wound up the tour in support of that album, things came to a head between singer-guitarist <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/glenn-frey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glenn Frey<\/a> and guitarist <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/don-felder\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Felder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>READ MORE:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/the-eagles-retiring-2026\/\">Are The Eagles Retiring in 2026?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The show in Long Beach, Calif., on July 31, 1980, was a fundraiser for Senator Alan Cranston, who thanked each of the band members at a meet-and-greet before the performance.<\/p>\n<p>According to Frey, Felder responded by saying,\u00a0&#8220;You&#8217;re welcome, Senator &#8230; I guess.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I felt Don Felder insulted Senator Cranston under his breath, and I confronted him with it. So now we&#8217;re onstage, and Felder looks back at me and says, &#8216;Only three more songs till I kick your ass, pal.&#8217; And I&#8217;m saying, &#8216;Great. I can&#8217;t wait,'&#8221; Frey later\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.glennfreyonline.com\/quotes\/eagles.htm\" target=\"_blank\">recalled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re out there singing &#8216;Best of My Love,&#8217; but inside both of us are thinking, &#8216;As soon as this is over, I&#8217;m gonna kill him.&#8217; That was when I knew I had to get out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The gig ended with Felder smashing a guitar against the wall backstage and speeding away in a limo, and the group went their separate ways after that.<\/p>\n<p>The members of the band all launched solo careers in the years that followed, with varying degrees of success and failure.<\/p>\n<h3>When Did the Eagles Reunite?<\/h3>\n<p>They all maintained over the years that the band was done, but the Eagles surprised everyone when they <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/eagles-reunion-travis-tritt-take-it-easy-reunion\/\">reunited<\/a> in December of 1993 to appear in the video for <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/travis-tritt\/\">Travis Tritt<\/a>&#8216;s cover of &#8220;Take It Easy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Just months later, they announced a full-scale reunion for the <em>Hell Freezes Over<\/em> Tour, but tensions remained between Frey and Felder.<\/p>\n<p>The band <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/the-eagles-fire-don-felder\/\" target=\"_blank\">fired Felder<\/a> in 2001, and they&#8217;ve continued to tour over the ensuing years, most recently with <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/vince-gill\/\">Vince Gill<\/a> and Glenn Frey&#8217;s son, Deacon Frey, in a new lineup following Frey&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/eagles-glenn-frey-dead\/\">death<\/a> in 2016.<\/p>\n<div class=\"photogallery-wrapper blog-photogallery \">\n<h2 class=\"photogallery-title\">PICTURES: See Inside Eagles Songwriter J.D.
