Gavin Newsom grew testy Thursday when pressed on <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/19\/us-news\/gavin-newsom-claims-hell-release-tax-returns-amid-doj-probe\/\">not releasing his tax returns since 2020<\/a>, deflecting to President Trump while insisting that federal investigations into him and his wife are part of a White House-directed witch hunt to \u201cfind something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The California Democrat \u2014 who has sought to position himself as one of Trump\u2019s chief antagonists ahead of a likely 2028 presidential run \u2014 was asked during a news conference for updates on his taxes and the <a href=\"http:\/\/google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/15\/us-news\/gavin-newsom-says-hes-being-investigated-by-department-of-justice\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1783630069700584&amp;usg=AOvVaw0667qkWSlBxHZh8yQlIRzL\">federal investigations involving him, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, his staff and people in his political orbit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you love taxes,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cDonald Trump, when has he released them?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gov. Gavin Newsom slammed the federal probes while speaking at a school in Davis. <span class=\"credit\">Joshua Koehn for CA Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jennifer Siebel Newsom\u2019s taxes are reportedly a focus of the investigations. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Post and other media outlets previously reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/26\/us-news\/fbi-probes-jennifer-siebel-newsoms-taxes-as-her-nonprofit-lost-1m\/\">investigators were examining Siebel Newsom\u2019s taxes<\/a>, while also looking at matters connected to Newsom\u2019s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/14\/us-news\/gavin-newsoms-ex-aide-dana-williamson-pleads-guilty\/\">pleaded guilty in a federal corruption case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>When the governor was reminded Thursday that he has attempted to position himself as different from Trump, Newsom said he had previously released his taxes but had no answer for why he has failed to provide them in recent years as promised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am [different], that\u2019s why I released all my taxes for decades,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite repeatedly pledging to release his tax returns every year while in office, Newsom has not publicly disclosed returns beyond those covering tax year 2020. He released several years\u2019 worth of returns alongside his gubernatorial campaigns, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/capitol\/2024\/11\/gavin-newsom-tax-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cal Matters<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article149406229.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sacramento Bee<\/a>, but has not released any further tax filings since 2022. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you will have all those new tax returns, because \u2014 I have no reason why you haven\u2019t gotten them already.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The governor and first partner both released statements last month slamming the Department of Justice. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The governor, who spoke at Robert E. Willett Elementary School in Davis to draw attention to his <a href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/2026\/newsom-budget-education-funding\/761141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record education budget<\/a>, declined to provide more specifics or updates on who in his inner orbit has been contacted by federal investigators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says everything you need to know about the United States of America under Donald Trump, and so we continue to maintain vigilance as it relates to the just weaponization by the Department of Justice and other power ministries under the Trump administration,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have much more to add, except it\u2019s pretty disgraceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>President Trump\u2019s finances became a hot topic during Thursday\u2019s news conference. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>US Attorney Eric Grant oversees the office reportedly investigating the Newsoms. <span class=\"credit\">United States Attorneys Office<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Newsom announced the federal probes in a video last month, accusing the Trump administration of weaponizing law enforcement against him and his family. Asked why he chose to reveal the investigations that way, Newsom framed it as a necessary public warning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, that was table stakes, and it\u2019s pretty obvious that I\u2019m not timid as it relates to calling out the abuses of the most corrupt administration in American history,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n<p>The investigations come as Williamson <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/07\/us-news\/dana-williamon-gavin-newsoms-ex-chief-of-staff-gets-sentencing-date\/\">prepares for a September sentencing hearing<\/a> in her federal corruption case. Williamson, who served as Newsom\u2019s chief of staff from 2022 to 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/14\/us-news\/gavin-newsoms-ex-aide-dana-williamson-pleads-guilty\/\">pleaded guilty in May<\/a> to conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, subscribing to a false tax return and lying to the FBI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Newsom said the investigations were spurred by expectations that he will run for president. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/Jon Cherry<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last week, Williamson\u2019s attorney told The Post that one of Newsom\u2019s appointees \u2014 lobbyist <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/02\/us-news\/who-is-alexis-podesta-gavin-newsom-appointee-who-wore-an-fbi-wire\/\">Alexis Podesta<\/a> \u2014 had <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/02\/us-news\/gavin-newsom-ally-alexis-podesta-wore-fbi-wire-in-corruption-probe-lawyer\/\">worn a wire in the FBI\u2019s investigation<\/a> into Williamson. The governor\u2019s office disputed that Podesta, who served on the governor\u2019s cabinet and was closely aligned on political matters with Williamson while she ran the governor\u2019s office, was part of Newsom\u2019s political orbit.<\/p>\n<p>While providing scant information during Thursday\u2019s news conference, Newsom pivoted into a sharp attack against Trump\u2019s \u201cgreat grift,\u201d referencing recent financial disclosures that Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/30\/us\/politics\/trump-financial-disclosure-crypto-windfall.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raked in at least $2 billion<\/a> since returning to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat more events did you need than the tax returns that he just put out?\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Newsom said he wasn\u2019t aware why his more recent tax returns have not been made available. <span class=\"credit\">David Buchan for Ca Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe $2.2 billion in income that Donald Trump received. I mean, to hire private attorneys \u2014 lives and reputation at risk for no other reason than they want to take me out,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing after my wife, doesn\u2019t have the guts \u2014 he\u2019s tried. \u2026 Couldn\u2019t figure out how to get me. And I said, \u2018This is ridiculous,\u2019 just going in 52 different directions again, because they were told, \u2018find something.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom offered little detail when asked about his own Freedom of Information Act request regarding the federal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know enough details about what detailed requests have come in,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cI just haven\u2019t been privy to any of those requests directly that have gone to other people, so I haven\u2019t seen them directly, so I don\u2019t know much more than you do about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor did not provide a specific date when his missing tax returns would be released.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
