Bernie Moreno in calling for Rep. Max Miller to step down from office Monday amid domestic abuse allegations from the Ohio senator\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Bernie Moreno \u2014 father of Miller\u2019s ex-wife, Emily Moreno \u2014 said in a statement Sunday that Miller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/02\/ohio-rep-max-miller-stay-in-race-01021642\" target=\"_blank\">should not serve in the House<\/a> soon after the House Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MaxMillerOH\/status\/2083923492676706663\" target=\"_blank\">did a livestream video<\/a> attempting to defend himself from abuse accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Many of Bernie Moreno\u2019s GOP colleagues were quick to back him following the statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know [Miller]. I haven&#8217;t read a whole lot about him, but if [Moreno] thinks he ought to resign, I&#8217;m supportive of that,\u201d Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Miller has denied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/assault-misogyny-verbal-threats-records-detail-new-allegations-against-rep-max-miller-bernie-moreno\/\" target=\"_blank\">the allegations<\/a>, which include pouring hot water on his ex-wife and holding a gun to her head. He has also denied accusations from his ex-wife that he broke his daughter\u2019s collarbone.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas condemned Miller, adding, \u201cHe should resign. He should quit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know Mr. Miller&#8217;s story, but I trust Bernie so much as a good friend, and his family has such high values,\u201d Marshall said in an interview. \u201cI couldn&#8217;t imagine them wanting this out in public. So to go through with this, it makes me think that they&#8217;re telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The surge of support from Bernie Moreno\u2019s Senate colleagues marks the first significant crack in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/01\/max-miller-abuse-divorce-gop-01021028\" target=\"_blank\">a wall of GOP silence<\/a> regarding the allegations against Miller. The skepticism from Miller&#8217;s own party will almost certainly weigh down the congressman\u2019s already floundering campaign as he battles Democratic candidate Brian Poindexter to keep his Cleveland-area House seat.<\/p>\n<p>Miller has until Wednesday to withdraw from the ballot and allow a crash primary to select a replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republican lawmakers stopped short of calling on Miller to withdraw or resign while expressing grave concern about the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accusations are very serious, and if there is truth to them, I am one who says that our elected officials need to be held to high standards,\u201d Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said. \u201cAnd certainly, when it comes to allegations of domestic abuse, child abuse, that&#8217;s not what we want in our lawmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Miller did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In response to Moreno\u2019s statement, Miller said on Sunday, \u201cIf my daughter said the same thing to me, I personally wouldn\u2019t wait two years before holding him accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know this isn\u2019t true and the only reason you are speaking out now is to hide from your own media circus,\u201d he added <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/maxmilleroh\/status\/2083945436188983439?s=46\" target=\"_blank\">in the post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Notably still silent was GOP Sen. Jon Husted, Ohio\u2019s other senator, who while leaving the Capitol Monday did not respond to reporters\u2019 questions about whether Miller should resign.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans in the Ohio House delegation are also staying quiet for now. Almost every House Republican from the state either declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment on Moreno\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>The exception was Rep. Jim Jordan, who brushed off questions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/30\/politics\/video\/the-arena-jim-jordan-anthony-fauci-hearing\" target=\"_blank\">in a Thursday CNN interview<\/a> about Miller but noted he was \u201ca good man\u201d and was recently campaigning for him.<\/p>\n<p>Asked Monday if Miller should still serve in Congress following Bernie Moreno\u2019s statement, spokesperson for Jordan Stefanie Farrell said, \u201cAs Mr. Jordan has said, it\u2019s up to the voters of Ohio\u2019s 7th District.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back in the Senate, other Republicans who were unaware of the situation declined to weigh in on the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not aware of the situation, so I don&#8217;t have a comment right now,\u201d said Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), who has been a leading GOP voice on domestic violence issues within the military.<\/p>\n<p>But a steady drip of Republican senators said Monday evening they trusted Bernie Moreno.\u201cIt would surprise me if Bernie were being untruthful,\u201d Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming said. \u201cI guess I was surprised that it bubbled up to the public sphere, but I suspect that Bernie has got a beat on the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Jim Justice of West Virginia said he was unaware of the details of the allegations but that \u201cBernie\u2019s a pretty level-headed guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know enough about the allegations, but like Bernie said, it sounds like he thinks he needs psychological help,\u201d Sen.
