Both firefighters have since been released and are recovering.<\/p>\n<p>For residents, the fire left behind more than charred walls and blown-out sections of the structure, it meant suddenly losing access to homes filled with years of memories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m choked up,\u201d displaced resident Keith Thompkins told <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/post\/crews-respond-6-alarm-building-fire-sea-spray-lane-foster-city\/19616626\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC7<\/a>. \u201cMy mom\u2019s old, she almost died. Horrible but I\u2019m alright.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompkins said he wasn\u2019t home when the fire broke out, but his elderly mother and her caretaker were inside. Both managed to escape safely as the flames spread.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The entire 51-unit building has been red-tagged by the Foster City Building Department, meaning residents cannot return to their homes. <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lisa Shoulders, who lives just several units from where the fire began, said she evacuated quickly but was left worried about belongings she had to leave behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur storage unit is close to the area that\u2019s involved in it,\u201d Shoulders said. \u201cWe have boxes of old family pictures and mementos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Images from the scene showed severe destruction across portions of the complex. One section of the building appeared to have been blown open after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/25\/us-news\/los-angeles-firefighters-blast-karen-bass-over-missed-pay-response-times\/\">firefighters<\/a> unleashed large amounts of water while battling the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>The fire also proved dangerous for the firefighters sent in to stop it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Fire crews remained at the scene Monday and are expected to stay for at least another 24 hours as they continue battling hotspots and monitoring the heavily damaged structure. <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kron4.com\/video\/foster-city-apartment-fire-displaces-dozens\/12031193\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KRON4<\/a>, fire officials described the blaze as particularly challenging because of the complex\u2019s density, extreme heat and rapidly moving flames.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrews had a tough time accessing the fire,\u201d San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department Chief Matt Turturici said. \u201cAs they moved down the road trying to get ahead of it, every time they pulled a ceiling the fire was above them and they had to keep moving down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turturici said conditions could become even more difficult as temperatures rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the temperature warms up today, you\u2019re going to see an increase in smoke production out here and that\u2019s just going to be natural as the humidity starts to fall and it gets a little bit warmer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>With the building red-tagged and residents displaced, the Red Cross is managing a temporary shelter and providing other services at the PJCC in Foster City. <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Firefighters are expected to remain at the complex through at least Tuesday as crews continue working to extinguish hotspots and assess the extensive damage.<\/p>\n<p>With the building red-tagged and residents displaced, the Red Cross is managing a temporary shelter and providing other services at the PJCC in Foster City.<\/p>\n<p>Residents affected by the fire can contact the Red Cross at 1-800-REDCROSS for information and assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the fire remains under investigation.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A massive fire tore through a Foster City condominium complex, damaging all 51 units and forcing residents from their homes as firefighters battled intense heat, flames and dangerous conditions.
