No coach of the U.S. men&#8217;s team had ever had a resume as stacked as Pochettino&#8217;s, who has led some of Europe&#8217;s most well-known clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>His original contract only bound him to the U.S. through this summer&#8217;s World Cup, in which the men&#8217;s team exited in the Round of 16 after a disappointing 4-1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/06\/nx-s1-5883842\/2026-world-cup-fifa-usmnt-belgium-round-of-16\" target=\"_blank\">loss to Belgium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before that loss, though, the team&#8217;s performance had been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/06\/15\/nx-s1-5857699\/2026-fifa-world-cup-week-1-highlights\" target=\"_blank\">resounding success<\/a>. Its three wins, over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/06\/12\/nx-s1-5850736\/2026-world-cup-usmnt-paraguay\" target=\"_blank\">Paraguay<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/06\/19\/nx-s1-5863602\/2026-fifa-world-cup-usmnt-australia\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/01\/nx-s1-5876418\/2026-world-cup-fifa-usmnt-bosnia-herzegovina-round-of-32\" target=\"_blank\">Bosnia-Herzegovina<\/a>, were the most the U.S. men had ever won in a World Cup.
