{"id":26465,"date":"2026-08-03T20:41:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:41:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=26465"},"modified":"2026-08-03T20:41:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:41:28","slug":"white-house-finalizes-ai-framework-behind-closed-doors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=26465","title":{"rendered":"White House finalizes AI framework behind closed doors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.axios.com\/F1PH7XnlINui3t3j01VEUotpIdk=\/1366x768\/smart\/2023\/10\/23\/230350-1698102230808.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The White House said on Monday it met its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/31\/inside-europe-lessons-ai-safety-trump-rules-loom\" target=\"_blank\">deadline<\/a> to establish a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/02\/trump-signs-new-ai-executive-order\" target=\"_blank\">voluntary<\/a> framework for evaluating advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/technology\/automation-and-ai\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a> models \u2014 but it won&#8217;t say what the framework contains, who&#8217;s seen it or when companies will start using it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>The framework is being closely watched beyond the industry players it directly applies to.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<ul>\n<li>Policymakers, AI safety advocates, and U.S. allies have been waiting to see what the rules for the most powerful models in the world look like.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What they&#8217;re saying: <\/strong>&#8220;The voluntary framework outlined in the June 2nd executive order was complete by the deadline,&#8221; a White House official said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Discussions with industry about next steps are underway,&#8221; the official said, adding that the administration is engaging with &#8220;many more&#8221; industry partners than just Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. <\/li>\n<li>Leading up to the deadline, the three labs gave the administration feedback on a draft of the framework. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s inside:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/10\/alternative-playbook-ai-regulation\" target=\"_blank\">framework<\/a> is meant to give AI developers a structure for engaging the government to determine whether models under development would be covered.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The framework is supposed to spell out the confidentiality, cybersecurity, insider-risk, intellectual-property protection use and nondisclosure requirements that would apply when the government gets access to models for up to 30 days before they&#8217;re released.<\/li>\n<li>The framework should also include which &#8220;trusted partners&#8221; will also have early access to models.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Zoom in: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/06\/promoting-advanced-artificial-intelligence-innovation-and-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">executive order<\/a> explicitly says the benchmarking process to assess advanced cyber capabilities of AI models will be classified. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The threshold for which models are covered under the order is also classified and will only be shared with AI developers and researchers &#8220;as appropriate.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The order does not similarly designate the voluntary framework as classified, and policymakers and other observers <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepCasar\/status\/2084280775881470144\" target=\"_blank\">expected<\/a> to see details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Between the lines: <\/strong>Companies are seeking clarity early so they know whether models under development are likely to fall under the framework.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Just because things are unclassified that doesn&#8217;t mean we are going to broadcast them to everyone,&#8221; the White House official said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s next: <\/strong>The White House will hold a staff-level meeting with companies on Tuesday to review the framework, a source familiar said.<\/p>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The White House said on Monday it met its deadline to establish a voluntary framework for evaluating advanced AI models \u2014 but it won&#8217;t say what the framework contains, who&#8217;s seen it or when companies will start using it.
