We were all set to go,\u201d Mr. Trump told reporters on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to signs of a possible agreement on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/strait-of-hormuz\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a critical waterway for oil traffic, and said talks would resume Monday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> clamped down on shipping in the strait in retaliation for Mr. Trump\u2019s airstrikes, which began Feb. 28 to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2026\/aug\/2\/trump-halts-strikes-iran-says-peace-deal-perimeters-place\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    SEE ALSO: Trump halts strikes on Iran, says peace deal \u2018perimeters\u2019 are in place<\/p>\n<p>  <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"\/>\n<p>The cost of Brent crude oil, an international benchmark, dropped about 6% to around $83 per barrel on Monday after Mr. Trump called off strikes.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Turmoil in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/strait-of-hormuz\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and other parts of the Middle East has caused oil prices to jump and recede for months, as the U.S. and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> go through cycles of diplomatic talks and renewed violence.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. gas prices have been notably higher since the start of the war.<\/p>\n<p>The average price stood at $4.10 per gallon on Monday, little-changed from a week ago but up 38% from when the war started, according to the AAA motor club.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> on Monday said it is not talking to the U.S. over control of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/strait-of-hormuz\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, even though Mr. Trump insisted that final negotiations were starting.<\/p>\n<p>                        <a name=\"pagebreak\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told a press conference that the only diplomatic conversations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> is maintaining are with Oman over creating an \u201cunderstanding on a route that would ensure the safe passage of shipping through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/strait-of-hormuz\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2026\/aug\/3\/iran-says-no-talks-us-expected-despite-donald-trumps-assurances\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>      SEE ALSO: Iran says no talks with U.S. expected despite Trump\u2019s assurances<\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"\/>\n<section class=\"author-contact-section\">\n<\/section><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. stocks surged Monday after President Trump called off massive strikes on Iran, renewing hopes for a diplomatic deal.
