In early 2025, legal firm Paul Weiss,which built its reputation on a mix of elite corporate litigation and defense of civil liberties, was targeted by the newly installed Trump administration for engaging in lawsuits against the government. As opposed to fighting that arguably illegal attack in court, Paul Weiss scrambled to make a deal with Trump that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/donald-trump-lawyers-judges-paul-weiss-2025\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">roiled the entire legal community<\/a>. According to the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/02\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-trump.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/02\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-trump.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/02\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-trump.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> on Sunday, that drive to capitulate lays bare a firm was caught between its progressive ideals and the business demand for corporate practice.<\/p>\n<p>While the firm has fought against the practice of separating migrant children from their parents, it also served <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/01\/wall-street-isnt-buying-leon-blacks-epstein-story\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">as outside counsel for Apollo Global Management<\/a> when co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/09\/billionaire-leon-black-allegedly-raped-a-woman-in-epsteins-mansion\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">Leon Black<\/a> faced scrutiny for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2021\/02\/leon-black-epstein-moma-protests\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">his ties to Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>. <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.washlaw.org\/washington-dc-court-awards-proud-boys-trademark-to-metropolitan-ame-church\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.washlaw.org\/washington-dc-court-awards-proud-boys-trademark-to-metropolitan-ame-church\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washlaw.org\/washington-dc-court-awards-proud-boys-trademark-to-metropolitan-ame-church\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It successfully sued<\/a> a chapter of neo-fascist group the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/02\/trumpism-the-proud-boys-and-the-extremist-allure-for-people-of-color\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">Proud Boys<\/a> following an attack on a Black church, even as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/04\/how-paul-weiss-tried-to-thwart-reporting-on-the-caesars-palace-collapse\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">worked on behalf of a client to suppress reporting<\/a> on the financial collapse of Caesars Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But despite Paul Weiss&#8217;s presence on all sides of philosophical and political divides, Trump singled it out for sanctions on March 14, 2025, writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/addressing-risks-from-paul-weiss\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">an executive order<\/a> that it and other firms had been \u201cundermining the judicial process and in the destruction of bedrock American principles.\u201d Just a few days later, the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/23\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-firm-trump.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/23\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-firm-trump.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/23\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-firm-trump.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>NYT<\/em><\/a> reported at the time, managing partner Brad Karp sent an email to its lawyers saying \u201cWe initially prepared to challenge the executive order in court, and a team of Paul, Weiss attorneys prepared a lawsuit in the finest traditions of the firm.\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Then, according to a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-trump.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-trump.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/paul-weiss-trump.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Times<\/em><\/a> report from 2025, Karp asked billionaire New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a longtime client of the firm, to broker a meeting for him with Trump. By the end of the Oval Office conversation, Karp had promised to provide \u201c$40 million in pro bono legal services on issues the president has championed,&#8221; among other concessions. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c2d4kex0w2ro\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">rescinded the order<\/a> soon after.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The swift capitulation put many other law firms at a disadvantage.
