{"id":26227,"date":"2026-08-03T16:02:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T11:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=26227"},"modified":"2026-08-03T16:02:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T11:02:01","slug":"new-yorker-china-races-to-own-the-industries-of-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=26227","title":{"rendered":"New Yorker: China races to own the industries of the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.axios.com\/pZEfkO4z2kCK_otvhBRhkXNJfmc=\/0x0:1920x1080\/1366x768\/2026\/07\/20\/1784569999661.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>America has been napping or distracted by trivialities while China is racing toward the future, in part by taking advantage of President Trump&#8217;s trade, immigration and budget policies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That&#8217;s the eye-opening reality that Evan Osnos unfurls in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2026\/08\/10\/the-future-made-in-china\" target=\"_blank\">12-page piece<\/a> for The New Yorker, &#8220;The Future, Made in China.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>China could beat the U.S. to the future on a host of fronts, including engineering a cure for cancer.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>What it says: <\/strong>&#8220;For China, America&#8217;s retreat comes just as decades of state investment, industrial policy, and diplomatic planning are paying off,&#8221; Osnos writes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An American executive<strong> <\/strong>told him: &#8220;People in Washington are worried that biotech is the next E.V.s &#8230; We&#8217;ve scared all of this f*cking talent back to China. If you look at the guys who are doing this, they used to work for Western pharma giants, or they were running a top university department somewhere.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In a flex, China now welcomes Western influencers, investors and commentators on &#8220;tech tours&#8221; that yield &#8220;infrastructure porn&#8221; and &#8220;Chinamaxxing.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Between the lines: <\/strong>Osnos, who lived in Beijing for eight years as a foreign correspondent, returned for 10 days as part of four months of reporting. He says the capital is noticeably quieter than when he left in 2013 \u2014 &#8220;an awkward serenity to life in the capital of a high-tech, one-party state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;The vehicles,<strong> <\/strong>many of which are electric now, move silently through the streets, and in any case the residents have fewer reasons to go out; China has the world&#8217;s busiest e-commerce market, and there isn&#8217;t much that can&#8217;t be delivered on the back of a scooter,&#8221; he writes.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;All day long, people scan each other&#8217;s QR codes to swap cash on such digital-payment systems as WeChat and Alipay, feeding the algorithms an ever more intricate portrait of their movements and preferences.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The intrigue: <\/strong>The surveillance future is here: Osnos felt constantly watched \u2014 because he was, including psychologically. At an AI expo in Beijing, Osnos stood in front of a kiosk that took an emotional X-ray by measuring &#8220;micro-gestures&#8221; in his face. The results: He possesses 76.67% positive emotion and 23.33% negative emotion, split between fear and rage.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The state can use such readings to zero in on potential disruptors. The same manufacturer makes a scan for schools that assigns pupils an alert level of red, yellow or blue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>By the numbers:<\/strong> China produces 70% of the world&#8217;s drones, electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and solar cells, the magazine says, and &#8220;deploys more industrial robots than the rest of the world combined, and, in medicine, it has surpassed the United States in the number of registered clinical trials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>China&#8217;s shipbuilding capacity<strong> <\/strong>is 200 times that of the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Friction point: <\/strong>China&#8217;s rulers avoid &#8220;overtly antagonizing America, because they believe that, even in decline, it remains uniquely dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>But Rush Doshi, China specialist at <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/contact\/003UH000007sdenYAA\/rush-doshi\" target=\"_blank\">Georgetown<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/experts\/rush-doshi\" target=\"_blank\">CFR<\/a>, says that if the U.S. loses the next wave of industries \u2014 AI, biotech and robotics \u2014 as it lost on solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles, &#8220;it would irreversibly change the balance of power.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>A think tank at Renmin University of China, in Beijing, published a report called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/rdcy.ruc.edu.cn\/zw\/jszy\/rdcy\/grzl_rdcy\/070fa2e9135e47f19c7c23ad88949765.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Thank Trump<\/a>,&#8221; which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/12\/business\/china-trump-xi-decline.html\" target=\"_blank\">argues<\/a> that his tariffs, attacks on allies and immigration policies have hastened the &#8220;twilight of an empire.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The bottom line:<\/strong> A European diplomat who has attended meetings with Xi Jinping and his advisers told Osnos they&#8217;re &#8220;feeling like the champions of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>America has been napping or distracted by trivialities while China is racing toward the future, in part by taking advantage of President Trump&#8217;s trade, immigration and budget policies.
