style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case began in July 2023, when Christine Geiger, owner of Studio 8 Hair Lab in Traverse City, Michigan, published several Facebook posts about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/comics-trans-queer-people-sophie-labelle-part-2\/\" class=\" staff-link\">transgender<\/a> people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the posts read, \u201cIf a human identifies as anything other than a man\/woman, please seek services at a local pet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/dog-haircut-transformation-before-after-groomer\/\" class=\" staff-link\">groomer<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It continued, \u201cYou are not welcome at this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/beauty-salon-fails-disasters\/\" class=\" staff-link\">salon<\/a>. Period.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geiger also wrote that if customers asked staff to use their preferred pronouns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/crazy-stories-quitting-fired\/\" class=\" staff-link\">employees<\/a> might call them \u201chey you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another post, she argued that her business had the right to refuse service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is America; free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/illustration-speech-bubbles-tang-yau-hoong\/\" class=\" staff-link\">speech<\/a>. criticism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 20 complaints were submitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/michigan-man-kristopher-karolkiewicz-takes-entire-family-lives-after-wife-mandykarolk-reddit-posts\/\" class=\" staff-link\">Michigan<\/a> Department of Civil Rights between July and November 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three of those complaints eventually became the basis for the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/funny-messed-up-court-cases\/\" class=\" staff-link\">legal<\/a> case against the salon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although none of the three complainants had actually tried to book an appointment, state officials explained that Michigan law also covers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/commercials-hate-pics\/\" class=\" staff-link\">advertising<\/a> that publicly tells protected groups they are unwelcome at a business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katie Adraianse, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, said the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act prohibits businesses from publishing statements indicating services will be denied because of someone\u2019s gender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/photography-id-evan-murphy\/\" class=\" staff-link\">identity<\/a> or expression, per <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Mail.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>After nearly three years of investigations and hearings, the Civil Rights Commission ruled the salon broke state law<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"attachment-link-container
