{"id":25478,"date":"2026-08-02T19:48:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=25478"},"modified":"2026-08-02T19:48:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:48:31","slug":"democrats-anti-ice-fervor-eclipses-laken-rileys-murder-by-illegal-immigrant-the-law-named-for-her","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=25478","title":{"rendered":"Democrats\u2019 anti-ICE fervor eclipses Laken Riley\u2019s murder by illegal immigrant, the law named for her"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It may have seemed a logical vote at the time for Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/angie-craig\/\">Angie Craig<\/a>, who early last year backed a bill named after slain nursing student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/laken-riley\/\">Laken Riley<\/a> that pressed Homeland Security to detain and deport illegal immigrants who commit even relatively minor crimes such as shoplifting.<\/p>\n<p>But now, 18 months later and seeking Democrats\u2019 nomination for Minnesota\u2019s open U.S. Senate seat, Ms. Craig can\u2019t stop apologizing.<\/p>\n<p>That included a mea culpa to the state\u2019s largest newspaper in March, saying, \u201cI regret my vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her chief rival in the primary, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, is determined to make her feel that regret, regularly pointing to the get-tough immigration policy as proof Ms. Craig isn\u2019t right for a state that saw two deaths of U.S. citizens attributed to President Trump\u2019s aggressive immigration policy.<\/p>\n<p>Larry Jacobs, professor of political science at the University of Minnesota, said the debate over immigration and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s arrests and deportations has emerged as the major dividing line in the Democratic primary race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlanagan\u2019s vociferous opposition to ICE and Trump\u2019s immigration policy is the anchor of her progressive campaign and drive to boost turnout,\u201d Mr. Jacobs said. \u201cCraig has retracted her vote for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/laken-riley\/\">Laken Riley<\/a> Act and Trump\u2019s policy while still holding a more pragmatic stance on immigration that aligns with her appeal to moderates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The issue is playing out elsewhere in the country, too.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>In Maine, Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, is fending off protests and claims that she enabled too-aggressive enforcement in her state. The intensity grew last month after a man was shot and killed in a traffic stop confrontation with ICE.<\/p>\n<p>But in Minnesota, the fight is Democrat versus Democrat, in a primary where left-wing activists are likely to dominate.<\/p>\n<p>The Aug. 11 primary could be an early test-run for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, where some hopefuls joined Ms. Craig in backing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/laken-riley\/\">Laken Riley<\/a> Act last year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"main-photo article-story-photo\">\n<section class=\"block more-from-story\" style=\"padding-bottom: 10px; margin-bottom: 0; border-bottom: 1px solid #ccc;\">\n<div class=\"block-content\">\n<figure class=\"photo-zoom\">\n<div class=\"photo\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/multimedia\/image\/ap-aptopix-trump-immigration-49513-jpg\/\" alt=\"President Donald Trump hugs Allyson Phillips, mother of Laken Riley, before he signs the Laken Riley Act in the East Room of the White House, Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, in Washington. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff of Georgia and Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego of Arizona. Mr. Gallego even co-sponsored the bill, saying Democrats needed to improve border security.<\/p>\n<p>In her March op-ed in the Minnesota Star Tribune, Ms. Craig highlighted how the four Senators \u2014 \u201cleaders I deeply respect\u201d \u2014 also voted for the bill.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Rep. April McClain Delaney, who also voted for the law just days into her freshman term, survived a primary challenge by former Rep. David Trone, who said she should have known better.<\/p>\n<p>And in Massachusetts, Patrick Roath is making an issue out of Rep. Stephen Lynch\u2019s vote for the law.<\/p>\n<p>Riley was killed in 2024 by a Venezuelan illegal immigrant who was caught and released under President Biden\u2019s lenient border policies.<\/p>\n<p>The Venezuelan man quickly amassed a criminal record, but ICE didn\u2019t take him into custody, allowing him to remain free in the community and murder Riley.<\/p>\n<p>Her death became a focal point in the immigration debate and spawned the law that now bears her name.<\/p>\n<p>The law pushes ICE to deport migrants with relatively minor criminal entanglements. That provision, known as Sarah\u2019s Law, was named for Sarah Root, slain by a drunk-driving illegal immigrant who was released on bail, whom ICE didn\u2019t consider a priority for pickup, and who then absconded for years.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-six House Democrats and a dozen Senate Democrats voted for the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Craig has explained her vote, just days into the new Trump administration, as a way to break with the \u201copen borders\u201d of the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent debate on NPR said she quickly realized that \u201cany additional authority to the Trump administration was the wrong decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI regret it,\u201d she reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Flanagan, who says ICE should be ripped apart, said Ms. Craig should have seen the danger in backing Mr. Trump on immigration even before the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, two U.S. citizens, in separate confrontations with Homeland Security officers in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump ran on a mass deportation agenda. It was literally in bright signs behind him at rallies in all caps that said \u2018mass deportation now,\u2019\u201d Ms. Flanagan said.<\/p>\n<p>She said Ms. Craig\u2019s past support for ICE \u201cshould be disqualifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Craig countered that Ms. Flanagan was focusing on a single vote while offering no broader immigration plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the course of her entire campaign, [she] has sat on the bleachers, complaining about the one vote I took in eight years,\u201d Ms. Craig said.<\/p>\n<p>In January, on the one-year mark of the law, ICE said it had arrested \u201cmore than 21,400 illegal aliens with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/laken-riley\/\">Laken Riley<\/a> Act crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans remain steadfastly in support of the new law, and questioned why Democrats would abandon it.<\/p>\n<p>                        <a name=\"pagebreak\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/angie-craig\/\">Angie Craig\u2019s<\/a> apology tour is a slap in the face to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/laken-riley\/\">Laken Riley\u2019s<\/a> family and every American whose life has been forever changed by violent crimes committed by illegals,\u201d said Hunter Lovell, spokesperson for the Republican National Committee. \u201cIt\u2019s another reminder that Democrats are willing to put the interests of illegal aliens ahead of the safety and security of American families.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"author-contact-section\">\n<\/section><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It may have seemed a logical vote at the time for Rep.
