You can already feel that <em>The Days Off<\/em> (<em>Los d\u00edas libres<\/em>), Argentine filmmaker Lucila Mariani\u2019s first feature, touches on female identity and coming-of-age themes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut there is also a technology and virtual worlds aspect that comes into play. Just read this part of a synopsis: \u201cAs the moon \u2018eclipses\u2019 animals and people around her, Bego meets REN__, an online friend, and through her discovers \u2018shifting, a practice in which teenagers believe they can access other realities through lucid dreaming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>The Days Off<\/em>, which will world premiere on Aug. 7 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/locarno-2026-film-clip-september-afternoon-nicolaas-schmidt-1236658923\/\">Filmmakers of the Present Competition<\/a> lineup of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/2026-locarno-film-festival-program-unveiled-hong-sang-soo-1236641562\/\">79th edition<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/locarno-film-festival-poster-2026-cindy-sherman-1236579961\/\">Locarno\u00a0Film Festival<\/a>, is a co-production between Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and France. <\/p>\n<p>The cast of <em>The Days Off<\/em> features Antonia Robolini, Luiza Quinteiro, Laura Paredes and Guillermo Berthold. Written and directed by Mariani, the movie features cinematography by Victoria Pereda and editing by Maximiliano Passarelli. Inwave Films is handling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\">international<\/a> sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201c<em>Los d\u00edas libres<\/em> explores themes that I have been drawn to throughout my career, such as horror, female identity, our relationship with technology and the virtual world and the limits of cinematic language,\u201d Mariani highlights in a director\u2019s statement. \u201cThis film is very personal to me. The internet was deeply formative in my life: it was where I met friends when I couldn\u2019t find them in the real world, where I pirated music and films that otherwise would never have been within my reach in my country. It was also a refuge where I began to understand who I was and who I wanted to be. In many ways, the internet taught me how to dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concludes the writer-director: \u201cThis film is an open love letter to that internet \u2013\u00a0the one that no longer quite exists, the one that is changing. To its hidden corners that not everyone can see. A wink, a secret, to those who, like me, do not always belong.
