{"id":25177,"date":"2026-08-02T13:02:41","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T08:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=25177"},"modified":"2026-08-02T13:02:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T08:02:41","slug":"gavin-newsom-reportedly-concerned-about-paramount-wb-merger-state-suit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=25177","title":{"rendered":"Gavin Newsom Reportedly Concerned About Paramount, WB Merger State Suit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGovernor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/gavin-newsom\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gavin-newsom_1\" data-tag=\"gavin-newsom\">Gavin Newsom<\/a> is concerned about the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/paramount-sued-warner-bros-merger-1236631313\/\">antitrust lawsuit<\/a> filed by 12 state attorneys general led by California against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/paramount\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paramount_1\" data-tag=\"paramount\">Paramount<\/a>\u2018s $111 billion takeover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/warner-bros\/\" id=\"auto-tag_warner-bros_1\" data-tag=\"warner-bros\">Warner Bros.<\/a> Discovery, and what it will mean for the entertainment industry, according to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/media\/newsom-expresses-concerns-about-state-antitrust-suit-against-paramount-1bc20411\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a Friday report, sources told the <em>WSJ<\/em> that Newsom has said if the merger is blocked due to the lawsuit, state employment will suffer. The outlet also notes that \u201cNewsom\u2019s office has encouraged Attorney General\u00a0Rob Bonta\u2019s\u00a0office, which has independent authority to file such suits, to find a resolution out of court.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tReps for Newsom and Bonta declined the <em>WSJ<\/em>\u2018s requests for comment; <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> also reached out to California\u2019s governor for comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn July 13, the states filed a lawsuit alleging that the merger would combine two of Hollywood\u2019s top five studios, which would lead to higher prices, less movies in theaters and a decrease in the variety and quality of content. \u201cThere is no debate here: This merger will snuff out competition, drive up prices, diminish content quality, and produce fewer movies and shows each year,\u201d said California Attorney General Rob Bonta at a press conference at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe filing of the suit led to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/paramount-warner-bros-merger-paused-states-challenge-1236651179\/\">temporary pause<\/a> on the merger, ruled by U.S. District Judge Araceli Mart\u00ednez-Olgu\u00edn on July 20; that temporary restraining order was subsequently <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/paramount-warner-bros-merger-pause-extended-1236655583\/\">extended<\/a> on July 23. One day later, Paramount agreed to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/paramount-warner-bros-merger-until-after-antitrust-trial-1236656187\/\">hold off on the acquisition<\/a> until the court makes a decision of whether or not the deal violates antitrust laws. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a court document filed on July 24, Paramount said they will not consummate the acquisition until June 2027 or five days after the court issues a ruling on the case, whichever is earlier. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAlongside California, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Washington are involved in the suit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile organizations including <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/warner-bros-paramount-opponents-attorney-general-suit-1236646844\/\">Cinema United<\/a> have shown support for the suit and actors\u00a0Benedict Cumberbatch, Alan Cumming and Benedict Wong <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/benedict-cumberbatch-cumming-wong-guardian-paramount-wbd-1236656997\/\">called on the U.K. to block<\/a> the\u00a0Paramount\u2013Warner Bros. merger, Newsom is not the only democratic power player to reportedly push for a settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn Monday, Ari Emanuel, WME executive chairman and CEO of TKO, wrote an op-ed for the <em>WSJ<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/ari-emanuel-supports-paramount-warners-deal-1236658602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in support of Paramount\u2019s acquisition<\/a> of Warner Bros.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWhen government officials manipulate markets to reach political outcomes, antitrust stops protecting competition and starts threatening it,\u201d Emanuel wrote. \u201cThe attorneys general should drop this case and get back to enforcing the laws as they are written. Let Hollywood creatives get back to trying to rip each other\u2019s heads off at the box office, in streaming, online and everywhere else we compete.
