However, as <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/news\/john-oliver-hbo-contract-last-week-tonight-through-2027-1236825361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Variety<\/em><\/a> pointed out, there\u2019s an important wrinkle to the story: Oliver\u2019s extension is for one year versus the industry \u201cstandard\u201d of a three-year pickup. (Oliver last renewed for three years in December 2023.) So, does that basically confirm that the world will get to enjoy even more Agent Z down the line?<\/p>\n<p>More likely, Oliver\u2019s decision has everything to do with the Paramount Skydance\u2019s possible acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Oliver has long been an opponent of the acquisition dating back to its announcement in September 2025. As recently as a monologue featured in a March episode, Oliver said that proposed acquisition was \u201cnot great news,\u201d adding, \u201cIn fact, if I may quote anyone who\u2019s ever accidentally sat on their Roku remote, I\u2019m in Paramount now\u2026how the f**k do I get out of here?\u2019\u201d Oliver has also spoken out about Paramount <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/02\/business\/media\/paramount-trump-60-minutes-lawsuit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">settling a Trump Administration lawsuit against CBS over a <em>60 Minutes<\/em> segment<\/a> as well as taking big-time shots at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gieTx_P6INQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bari Weiss\u2019 management of CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Related Video<\/p>\n<p>Oliver\u2019s long held a semi-joking, mostly contentious relationship with Warner Bros. (HBO\u2019s parent company), regularly referring to his corporate overlords as his \u201cbusiness daddy.\u201d He\u2019s also routinely integrated real criticism of WB\u2019s business practices across <em>Last Week Tonight<\/em>, including their <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/04\/john-oliver-dings-business-daddy-warner-bros-discovery-content-purge-hbo-max-rebrand-1235328069\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cbotched\u201d rebranding for HBO Max<\/a>. However, when you win as many awards as <em>Last Week Tonight<\/em> (including two Peabody Awards and five Critics Choice Awards), they\u2019ve basically had to grin and bear through the hijinks of their \u201cbusiness baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the acquisition, it was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/07\/judge-pauses-paramount-warner-bros-merger\/\" target=\"_blank\">paused amid an ongoing antitrust lawsuit<\/a>.
