There are a great number of shows that tried to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/stranger-things-blu-ray-release-2026-end-of-an-era\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Netflix phenomenon <em>Stranger Things<\/em><\/a>, both on the streaming service itself and among its competitors. Netflix\u2019s <em>I Am Not Okay With This <\/em>and<em> Locke &amp; Key<\/em>, Hulu\u2019s <em>Goosebumps<\/em> revival, and Prime Video\u2019s <em>Paper Girls <\/em>were all promoted as potential <em>Stranger Things<\/em> replacements, even though their similarities to the series varied.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>Even now, ten years after the show began and six months after its January 2026 series finale, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/below-charlie-heaton-netflix-stranger-things-similar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Heaton\u2019s next Netflix show, <em>Below<\/em>,<\/a> is currently being marketed as a shorter, more horror-centric spin on the small-town supernatural mystery. <em>Stranger Things<\/em> had something that few shows could recapture, as the show blended nostalgic coming-of-age dramedy with enough mystery, fantasy, and horror plot elements to keep viewers enthralled. One Netflix mega hit did, however, boast both of these qualities.<\/p>\n<p>Anchored by a star-making turn from Jenna Ortega as the title character, Netflix\u2019s<em> Addams Family <\/em>reimagining <em>Wednesday<\/em> saw the legendary director Tim Burton turn the macabre family comedy franchise into a teen drama set at a magic school. While this might sound similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/harry-potter-hbo-rings-of-power-rival\/\" target=\"_blank\">HBO\u2019s upcoming <em>Harry Potter <\/em>reboot<\/a>, <em>Wednesday<\/em> injected enough menace, horror, and death into proceedings to ensure the show felt more like <em>Stranger Things<\/em> than a children\u2019s movie. Loosely based on the books of popular &#8217;90s YA horror author Christopher Pike, <em>The Midnight Club<\/em> was set in a hospice facility for teenagers with terminal illnesses. The show\u2019s heroes all had little time left to live, so they made the most of their lot by sharing gruesome, scary stories every night at the stroke of midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Starring <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/db\/tv-show\/the-midnight-club\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Shards<\/em>\u2019 Igby Rigney<\/a>, Iman Benson, Annarah Cymone, and a scene-stealing Ruth Codd as the troubled but darkly hilarious patient Anya, <em>The Midnight Club<\/em> pulled off something miraculous in terms of the show\u2019s tone. Early on, the show was a grounded, rather heartbreaking drama about teens dying long before their time, which was interrupted by creepy, short-form horror vignettes that the kids shared to take their minds off things.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the supernatural aspects of the show\u2019s story began to bleed into its \u201creality\u201d as the members of the titular club learned more about the mysterious, shady facility housing them. While <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/insomnia-stephen-king-perfect-for-mike-flanagan-adaptation\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flanagan\u2019s upcoming Stephen King adaptation <em>Carrie<\/em><\/a> will be a more straightforward teen drama, and even one that features a psychic teen like <em>Stranger Things<\/em>, <em>The Midnight Club <\/em>remains his best blend of <em>Wednesday <\/em>and<em> Stranger Things<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the show never got to fulfill its full potential since Netflix canceled<em> The Midnight Club <\/em>after its first season. Unlike Flanagan\u2019s four other Netflix original shows,<em> The Haunting of Hill House<\/em>, <em>The Haunting of Bly Manor<\/em>, <em>Midnight Mass<\/em>, and<em> The Fall of the House of Usher<\/em>, <em>The Midnight Club <\/em>was not originally intended to be a self-contained miniseries.<\/p>\n<p>Flanagan had plans to adapt Pike\u2019s standout novel <em>Remember Me <\/em>as the main storyline of season 2, and <em>The Midnight Club <\/em>season 1 ended with a bombshell hint at the mysteries of its hospice setting.
