It\u2019s been on the New York Times bestseller list for 15 weeks and counting, and sold more than 461,000 copies, according to Circana Bookscan. After a bidding war, Anne Hathaway is attached to star in and produce a movie adaptation for Amazon MGM Studios.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cYesteryear\u201d has been one of the hottest books of the summer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It comes in the wake of several tradwife-focused books published in the last 18 months, and several more in the pipeline. There are no less than five recent or upcoming books called \u201cTradwife\u201d or \u201cTrad Wife\u201d alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have known. It is honestly a nightmare,\u201d quipped Sarah Langan, whose \u201c<a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"166822965X\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FTrad-Wife-Novel-Sarah-Langan%2Fdp%2F166822965X%2F%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2026%2F08%2F01%2Flifestyle%2Fhow-tradwives-took-over-the-book-industry%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" rel=\"nofollow\">Trad Wife: A Novel<\/a>\u201d comes out Sep. 29. \u201cSomeone told me \u2018Yesteryear\u2019 was going to be big \u2026 [but] when you write a book you can\u2019t think about that .\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Loan Le, Langan\u2019s editor at Atria\/Simon &amp; Schuster, said the tradwife trend hasn\u2019t surprised her, but its scale has. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cIt is honestly a nightmare,\u201d quipped Sarah Langan, whose \u201cTrad Wife: A Novel\u201d comes out Sep. 29, of the publishing trend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI just didn\u2019t expect this amount. Everywhere I see now is about tradwives, I didn\u2019t expect it to blow up,\u201d Le told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>When she acquired Langan\u2019s book in March of 2025, the appeal wasn\u2019t the subject matter \u2014\u00a0she was aware that there\u2019d been a \u201cbig auction\u201d for \u201cYesteryear\u201d but the book had yet to come out. Langan \u2014 a noted horror author Le had worked with on two previous books \u2014 and her unique perspective on tradwives was the attraction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like a true conversation versus an attack or a criticism,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Langan\u2019s gothic-tinged book focuses on a journalist sent to cover a wifely influencer, only to find that something is not right at the woman\u2019s farmhouse.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Michelle\u2019s Brandon \u201cTrad Wife\u201d thriller is out Aug. 4.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The author admits that she did think of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/magazines\/the-sunday-times-magazine\/article\/meet-the-queen-of-the-trad-wives-and-her-eight-children-plfr50cgk\">infamous interview<\/a> Hannah Neeleman of Ballerina Farm did with the Times of London in 2024. A journalist portrayed the tradwife queen as an utterly exhausted mother-of-many who had no help with the kids \u2014 despite a billionaire father-in-law \u2014 and an overbearing husband who\u2019d pushed her to give up her Juilliard ballerina dreams and give birth without pain relief. But Langan didn\u2019t want her book to be about any particular tradwife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to harm someone personally,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>The appeal of tradwives as a literary subject is vast.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Saratoga Schaefer\u2019s \u2018Trad Wife\u2019 is about a homesteader so desperate for a baby, she allows a demon to impregnate her,<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTrad lifestyles are really in the collective consciousness right now. As authors, we get ideas from all the things we see around us, so it makes sense that multiple novels about trad wives would come<br \/>out around the same time,\u201d said Hallie Shepherd, whose debut novel \u201c<a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"0063489511\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FCall-Off-Dark-Atmospheric-Connection%2Fdp%2F0063489511%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2026%2F08%2F01%2Flifestyle%2Fhow-tradwives-took-over-the-book-industry%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">Call Off the Dark<\/a>\u201d \u2014 about a tradwife grieving the murder of her first husband and dealing with the return of her current husband\u2019s deceased brother \u2014 is out Sep. 22.<\/p>\n<p>Saratoga Schaefer \u2014 whose novel \u201c<a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"B0GKQW8FZQ\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAudible-Trad-Wife-A-Novel%2Fdp%2FB0GKQW8FZQ%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2026%2F08%2F01%2Flifestyle%2Fhow-tradwives-took-over-the-book-industry%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trad Wife<\/a>,\u201d \u00a0about a homesteader so desperate for a baby, she allows a demon to impregnate her,\u00a0was released this past February \u2014 notes that the subject du jour is a riff on a long-standing trope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have always been domestic suspense books about unhinged housewives,\u201d Schaefer said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hallie Shepherd, whose debut novel \u201cCall Off the Dark\u201d \u2014 about a tradwife grieving the loss of her first husband and dealing with the return of her current husband\u2019s deceased brother \u2014 is out Sep. 22.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jo Piazza, whose July 2025 murder mystery, \u201c<a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"B0DN29LCP5\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAudible-Studios-Brilliance-Everyone-Lying%2Fdp%2FB0DN29LCP5%2F%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2026%2F08%2F01%2Flifestyle%2Fhow-tradwives-took-over-the-book-industry%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Everyone Is Lying to You<\/a>,\u201d was an early entry into the tradwife subgenre, believes \u201cso much of this trend is about women\u2019s rage.\u201d Some book-loving, burnt-out modern gals are keen to see their domestic-goddess counterparts get their comeuppance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a performance,\u201d Piazza told The Post. \u201cThey often feel like friends and we develop a real emotional connection to them and that emotional spectrum can range from love to hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she first brought the manuscript to her publisher in 2024, tradwives weren\u2019t nearly so hot, and selling it took some convincing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an instant \u2018yes,\u2019 \u201d she said of the book, which went on to become a bestseller.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jo Piazza\u2019s \u2018Everyone Is Lying To You\u2019 was an early entry to the tradwife trend. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The movement isn\u2019t limited to fiction. <\/p>\n<p>Amy Irvine\u2019s \u201c<a data-aps-asc-tag=\"nypost-20\" data-aps-asin=\"196630238X\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.nypostlink.com?btn_ref=org-19984c113c692001&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAlmost-Animal-Motherhood-Wildness-American%2Fdp%2F196630238X%3Ftag%3Dnypost-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2026%2F08%2F01%2Flifestyle%2Fhow-tradwives-took-over-the-book-industry%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" rel=\"nofollow\">Almost Animal: A Memoir of Motherhood, Wildness and the American West<\/a>,\u201d out Nov. 10 from Spiegel &amp; Grau, is being marketed as an \u201canti-tradwife manifesto,\u201d though Irvine notes she isn\u2019t anti-tradwife.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, she\u2019s a sixth-generation Utahn who hails from a long line of Mormon women who have led challenging, complicated lives.<\/p>\n<p>While she said she was \u201cfirst in-line\u201d to buy a copy of \u201cYesteryear,\u201d she took issue with its lack of empathy for its protagonist \u2014 a common criticism of the blockbuster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s not blame the women,\u201d she said. \u201cIn the end, she\u2019s just treated like one of Freud\u2019s female patients who\u2019s labeled crazy.
