And yet we rarely stop to notice it. Not unless it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/product-design-fails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \" class=\" staff-link\">dreadfully bad<\/a> (and, let\u2019s be honest, we\u2019ve all seen plenty of that), or remarkably good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That\u2019s the strange thing about good design, though: when it works, it disappears. You don\u2019t think about the handle of a knife that fits your hand perfectly, or a sign that leads you exactly where you need to go. It\u2019s only when someone gets it right\u2014unexpectedly, cleverly, beautifully\u2014that we actually stop and pay attention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And that\u2019s what we\u2019ll be looking at in what follows: designs so interesting and creative that they stop you mid-scroll. Whether they\u2019re impressively grand, carefully considered, or quietly stunning, one thing ties them all together: imagination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now let yours wander as you peruse this list of our favorite designs shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/interestingcreativedesign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">Interesting Creative Design<\/a> over on Instagram, and don\u2019t forget to upvote the ones you find most impressive.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-1\"><\/p>\n<p>Like many things in life, design is often talked about in binary terms: it\u2019s either \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Unlike \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/funny-bad-design-fails\/\" class=\" staff-link\">bad design<\/a>,\u201d something most of us have encountered so often that it needs no introduction, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/smart-good-design-pics\/\" class=\" staff-link\">good design<\/a>,\u201d the International Council of Design (ICoD) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theicod.org\/en\/professional-design\/identifying-professional-design\/good-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">says<\/a>, is rare. And while identifying bad design is a bit of a <em>you\u2019ll know it when you see it<\/em> situation, identifying good design\u2014though subjective and immeasurable\u2014is arguably a little more nuanced.<\/p>\n<p>While the ICoD describes it as following \u201ca design methodology that responds to the social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects of the work,\u201d the legendary German industrial designer Dieter Rams distilled a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/designmuseum.org\/discover-design\/all-stories\/what-is-good-design-a-quick-look-at-dieter-rams-ten-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">10 now-iconic principles<\/a> that offer us a fuller, more concrete picture of what good design <em>is<\/em> and <em>does<\/em> to earn this label.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-3\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitsoe.com\/us\/about\/good-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">According to Rams<\/a>, good design:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is innovative.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Makes a product useful.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is aesthetic.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Makes a product understandable.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is unobtrusive.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is honest.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is long-lasting.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is thorough down to the last detail.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is environmentally friendly.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"ordered\"><span class=\"ql-ui\" contenteditable=\"false\"\/>Is as little design as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-5\"><\/p>\n<p>A neat trick of this framework is that by defining what good design is, Rams also quietly defined what it refuses to be. Because if we invert these principles, we get a fairly accurate portrait of bad design: derivative, useless, confusing, self-important, dishonest, disposable, careless, wasteful, and cluttered. <\/p>\n<p>But by these definitions, it\u2019s genuinely difficult to know whether the designs featured in this list would qualify as \u201cgood\u201d by expert standards\u2014we don\u2019t know what they feel like to use, what it\u2019s like to live with them, or how they hold up over time. That said, that\u2019s not what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/interestingcreativedesign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">Interesting Creative Design<\/a> ever set out to prove. Its name promised interesting, creative designs, and it sure delivered.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-8\"><\/p>\n<p>Some are a little wacky or slightly surreal\u2014like the mirrored chair by Julia Chiaramonti, which seems to change shape entirely depending on where you\u2019re standing, or Richard Wilson&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.richardwilsonsculptor.com\/sculpture\/turning-the-place-over-2008.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">Turning the Place Over<\/a><\/em>, a chunk of an actual Liverpool building that slowly rotates in midair. <\/p>\n<p>Others are simply visually satisfying, built around clever engineering you can&#8217;t quite stop looking at. Others are appealing for their sheer novelty, like the fully transparent bathtub. <\/p>\n<p>And then there are the quiet, practical ones: designs that solve a very specific, everyday problem so elegantly that you almost miss the cleverness\u2014like the Dog Hut, a pet bed that doubles as a side table.<\/p>\n<p>What makes each of these designs so enticing isn&#8217;t whether they&#8217;d survive a rigorous durability test or meet a professional&#8217;s checklist for &#8220;good&#8221; design. It&#8217;s the creativity behind them\u2014the willingness to look at an ordinary object and ask, &#8220;What if this worked completely differently?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-11\"><\/p>\n<p>Take the \u201cmagnificently nutty\u201d Lamborghini Marzal. It never made it past the concept stage: only one was built, and it was never intended for production. By Rams\u2019 standards, it fails almost immediately: a car nobody can buy isn\u2019t \u201cuseful\u201d in any conventional sense. It doesn\u2019t help that the thing is made with enough glass to earn it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/concept\/marvel-excellence-lamborghini-marzal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\" staff-link\">comparisons to a greenhouse<\/a>, or that even Ferruccio Lamborghini himself reportedly balked at the doors, pointing out they left passengers with no privacy whatsoever and that \u201ca lady\u2019s legs would be there for all to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And yet the Marzal shaped the design language of Lamborghinis that came after it\u2014models people did buy and drive for decades.<\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<div class=\"open-list-item open-list-block clearfix text-block \"> <span id=\"list-text-14\"><\/p>\n<p>And this is a good reminder: sometimes a design\u2019s value has nothing to do with whether it works, or even whether it exists in usable form. Sometimes even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/bad-design-things\/\" class=\" staff-link\">impractical design<\/a> is exactly what good design needs in order to happen next.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps what makes the designs on this list \u201cuseful,\u201d to borrow Rams\u2019 term, is precisely this: not that they necessarily solve a problem more efficiently, but that they make us see an ordinary object\u2014a bathtub, a chair, a car\u2014as something worth a second look, or something worth building on.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than catering to conventional notions of what design should or ought to do, they invite us to notice and to imagine.
