In 2002, Morocco and Spain had a standoff after both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/morocco-spain-squabble-over-island\/\" target=\"undefined\">sent forces to a small uninhabited island off Ceuta<\/a>. And in May 2021, amid a deepening diplomatic spat over the disputed Western Sahara region, the Moroccan government <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spain-europe-africa-morocco-migration-9833744a7058cc9438a8d7417d2944c6\" target=\"undefined\">loosened its border controls<\/a>, resulting in nearly 8,000 people from Morocco and sub-Saharan countries pouring into Ceuta in just two days.
