Those questions are for [Marvel],\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/mahershala-ali-your-mother-your-mother-your-mother\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>GQ<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThey didn\u2019t want to do it, so they should answer that question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The interview centered on the actor\u2019s\u00a0new movie <em>Your Mother Your Mother Your<\/em> <em>Mother<\/em>, which happens to be written and directed by Bassam Tariq, the filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2022\/09\/blade-director-bassam-tariq-marvel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">originally attached<\/a> to Marvel\u2019s\u00a0<em>Blade<\/em> reboot. Ali was announced as the vampire hunter back in 2019, but besides a voice cameo in an\u00a0<em>Eternals<\/em> post-credits scene, he never actually played the role. Tariq left the\u00a0<em>Blade<\/em> movie in 2022, reportedly weeks before production was set to begin. <em>Your Mother<\/em>\u2026 is the movie he worked on in the aftermath, eventually reuniting with Ali and getting to put all that <em>Blade<\/em>\u00a0training to use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whatever reason, that project is not for me,\u201d Ali said of\u00a0<em>Blade<\/em>. \u201cIf they wanted to do it, we would\u2019ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on\u2026 Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would\u2019ve done the movie. So we\u2019re not doing the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Related Video<\/p>\n<p>Even Marvel Studios\u2019 Kevin Feige <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/07\/kevin-feige-blade-reboot-mahershala-ali-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has admitted<\/a> to\u00a0<em>Blade<\/em>\u2019s failure, blaming it on a \u201cgood script\u201d never becoming a \u201cgreat script,\u201d and saying, \u201cI am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn\u2019t get off the ground with Mahershala.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Your Mother\u2026<\/em> has Ali doing his own stunts, including sword work. \u201cAs a former athlete, I\u2019ve dreamed of doing my own stunts. I was very excited to do stunts in <em>Blade<\/em> and trained for a long time for that, so it was a huge relief to get to put that work to use,\u201d Ali said. Added Tariq, \u201c\u2026I saw the way he uses a sword on <em>Blade<\/em>. The first time he was doing sword practice on <em>Blade<\/em>, the stuff coming back was incredible. Then, here, it was exceptional to see the way Mahershala rose to that occasion; he was able to anchor it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s even a scene in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hCXfh1oB3oc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the trailer<\/a> where Ali\u2019s character brandishes a sword, which <em>GQ<\/em>\u2019s Derek Lawrence called \u201cgenius-level marketing\u201d as a nod to those who\u2019d wanted to see Ali\u2019s Blade. \u201cI would agree with you,\u201d said Ali. \u201cI\u2019m glad we were able to satisfy that and kind of move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother<\/em> is set to debut at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival in September. The movie\u2019s logline reads, \u201cFollowing the death of his wife, a devoutly religious hitman embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children, confronting the forces closing in around him \u2013 and the beliefs threatening to unravel within.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Marvel is moving in a different supernatural direction.
