Many of its critical components are custom-built and irreplaceable on any short timeline. While blockades in the Strait of Hormuz have spiked oil and gasoline prices worldwide, there’s been enough slack in the global system to keep prices from going even higher.

But much of that slack is now tapped, and hobbling a facility like Abqaiq would quickly send global oil and crude prices spiking, said Thomas Warrick, who served as deputy assistant secretary for counterterrorism policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Trump’s first term and has visited Abqaiq.

“Abqaiq is among the most important pieces of critical infrastructure on the planet,” said Warrick, who has called the facility the “Panama Canal” of global energy markets. “It ought to be one of the places on the planet that gets the most attention from security officials, economists, engineers, and technical people.”

It’s happened before – a Houthi strike on Abqaiq in 2019 spiked oil prices 20 percent overnight, at a time when the world was not in the midst of an historic oil crisis. The facility was able to recover in about a week because the most sensitive sections were not damaged.

But recovery wouldn’t likely be as swift this time if the Houthis are able to cause real damage to the facility, said Greg Priddy, an expert on energy market disruption who worked at the U.S. Energy Information Administration under President George W. Bush.

“If there’s one single point failure in oil and gas volumes, that’s it,” he said. “If this takes additional volumes off, it’s going to make inventories fall faster, and that’s going to increase the price impact.”

The facility is part of a pipeline that has allowed about 7 million barrels per day of Saudi crude to be routed around the Strait of Hormuz, helping avoid the worst effects of the war’s disruptions. If that pipeline suffers significant damage and is even partially shut down, much of that volume would be lost, creating even more severe global oil shortages.

In fact, it is such a sensitive target, Priddy theorized, that the Iranians have largely avoided striking it because knocking it offline would invite massive repercussions.

That calculus may be changing, though. The Houthis say they have struck parts of Abqaiq in recent days, and satellite imagery shows plumes of smoke wafting from the facility, though it is unclear if it was the result of an attack. The Saudis have confirmed only that “Iran-backed militias in Iraq” have targeted Saudi “oil facilities,” but did not specify whether Abqaiq was involved.

But if those attacks are a prelude to strikes on Abqaiq itself, they would come at the worst possible moment for President Donald Trump as he tries to negotiate an end to conflict – especially with cost of living concerns top of mind and the Republican majority in Congress under threat.

On Wednesday, Trump pledged to ramp up attacks on Iran and its proxies after the attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and U.S. military installations in recent days.

“We’re going to beat the fucking shit out of them,” he told Fox News.

Though so far the Houthi attacks haven’t done much damage, they broadcast that there is still room for a significant escalation in the regional conflict, said Mohammed al-Basha, founder of the Basha Report risk-advisory firm based in Washington and an expert on Yemen. He said Iran is using the attack to split Saudi Arabia’s alliance with the U.S.

“Iran’s message has been to the Saudis: ‘Look what America has gotten you into. We could make all these problems disappear, we could mediate with the Houthis, we could communicate with the Iraqi groups, and we can make all these problems go away,’” he said.

Global energy markets are already in a relatively precarious position.

The attack comes a week after oil prices briefly topped $100 a barrel for the first time since May amid resumed strikes by the U.S. and Iran. Global oil storage is now near tank bottom. The U.S. and other countries supplying the market with strategic petroleum reserves likely won’t be able to do so for much longer. And, worse for Trump’s political standing, the average gallon of gas in the U.S. now once again tops $4.

The Houthis and Saudi Arabia have been trading strikes in recent weeks, putting at risk an informal ceasefire in place since 2022. That fighting has already partially shut a second vital global energy market chokepoint and further risks major disruption to regional crude oil infrastructure.

But the threats to Saudi infrastructure extend far beyond the region, said Michael Ratney, who served as U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia in the Biden administration.

“It would be wrong to think it’s just a threat to Saudi Arabia,” he said. “It builds risk into the system in a way that gets priced up, and eventually that turns into higher prices at the gas pump.”

The Yemeni militant Houthi group says it’s targeting vital Saudi Arabian energy facilities – a situation that threatens to harden high gasoline prices at a precarious moment for Republicans ahead of the midterms.
