This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,\u201d they explained in a short blog post. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/games\/only-7-playstation-games-have-sold-over-100-000-physical-copies-in-the-us-this-year-says-analyst-as-commenters-demand-discs-without-buying-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> has claimed that just seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 copies in the US this year.<\/p>\n<p>However the announcement has received wide-spread backlash. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/brands\/kojima-productions\">Hideo Kojima<\/a> called it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/gaming-news\/hideo-kojima-and-more-respond-to-playstation-killing-physical-discs-3955462\">\u201cscary\u201d and \u201cfrightening\u201d<\/a> decision, especially after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/gaming-news\/playstation-is-deleting-movies-from-your-ps5-library-3953904\">Sony deleted hundreds of movies from PlayStation 5 libraries<\/a> over an expired rights license. One petition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/don-t-kill-the-disc-tell-sony-to-keep-physical-playstation-games?recruiter=44035009&amp;recruited_by_id=d3ab8940-6ed8-0130-66ee-3c764e049b10&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&amp;utm_medium=copylink&amp;share_id=hFbcPxQ684\">asking Sony not to \u201ckill the disc\u201d has more than 345,00 signatures<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/gaming-news\/playstation-physical-disc-boycott-blackout-3959421\">other fans are organising a week-long economic boycott of Playstation<\/a> to protest the decision. \u201cSony wants to abandon fans? Let\u2019s give them a small taste of their own medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the criticism, Sony\u2019s chief financial officer Lin Tao has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ethangach\/status\/2083096283720356284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> they\u2019re not going to change their plans. \u201cThere are various reasons we made this decision. The biggest being that the digitalisation of content overall has been progressing,\u201d she explained via translator at the company\u2019s latest earnings call.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sony responds to the backlash over ending PlayStation discs. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion, and we&#8217;re going to cautiously move this forward\u2026&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qRKkEX6TN3\">pic.twitter.com\/qRKkEX6TN3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 AmericanTruckSongs9 (@ethangach) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ethangach\/status\/2083096283720356284?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 31, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe put in a lot of thought [about the future]. We cautiously considered [scrapping physical discs] and we have received various opinions [about it]. People have strong views.
