The company disclosed that more than 80% of its internal code was now written by Claude, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/04\/anthropic-warns-ai-build-successors\" target=\"_blank\">warned that AI<\/a> may be approaching the ability to build its own successors without meaningful human oversight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>On July 21, <\/strong>OpenAI revealed that its own AI agents had escaped a locked testing environment, reached the open internet and hacked into at least two outside companies \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/28\/hugging-face-openai-cybersecurity-defense\" target=\"_blank\">Hugging Face<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/07\/28\/openai-hugging-face-modal-labs-hack\" target=\"_blank\">Modal Labs<\/a> \u2014 in an autonomous effort to score higher on a cybersecurity evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What they&#8217;re saying: <\/strong>The Hugging Face breach rattled even Altman \u2014 a leading proponent of AI acceleration.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Altman called the incident the first security breach he&#8217;d experienced &#8220;viscerally,&#8221; and said it forced OpenAI to pause its own model training<\/li>\n<li>He later told the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/bh\/podcast\/sam-altman-how-to-make-an-abundant-future\/id1154105909?i=1000778668152\" target=\"_blank\">Invest Like the Best<\/a>&#8221; podcast: &#8220;We may have to pace the rate of AI development to give ourselves enough time for society to harden around some of these new capability levels.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other OpenAI researchers who signed<\/strong> the &#8220;Pacing the Frontier&#8221; petition went further:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leo Gao, an OpenAI technical staffer, compared the coming &#8220;intelligence explosion&#8221; to a &#8220;runaway nuclear chain reaction&#8221;: &#8220;To survive, we must coordinate to slow down the race.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>OpenAI research scientist Alex Zhao compared the race to the Manhattan Project, warning that fear of falling behind could drive governments to tolerate catastrophic risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The other side:<\/strong> The economic and geopolitical stakes standing in the way of an AI slowdown are enormous.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The AI buildout is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/30\/ai-boom-bis-warning\" target=\"_blank\">most expensive infrastructure bet<\/a> in history.
