I Feel Like a Woman!\u201d singer, 60, said she and her sisters, Jill and Carrie Ann, regularly witnessed fights between their mom, Sharon, and stepdad, Jerry Twain, while growing up in Ontario, Canada, and were also \u201ckicked around\u201d themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey loved each other. They went through so many ups and downs together, but they fought a lot, and they got violent often,\u201d Twain told Thursday\u2019s episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vVuXFDbMjlA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR\u2019s \u201cWild Card with Rachel Martin.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Shania Twain revealed she grew up in a \u201cvery violent\u201d home where she and her sisters were abused by their parents. <span class=\"credit\">Kevin Mazur Getty Images for SiriusXM<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Martin asked whether that violence extended to Twain and her sisters, the Grammy winner replied, \u201cYeah, with me too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, definitely,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI mean, both my parents were pretty harsh physically. We definitely got smacked around a lot, and kicked around sometimes, literally kicked around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twain, who was born Eilleen Edwards, said her parents \u201churt each other the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very violent. So my mom, you know, she would lose clumps of hair. She was bruised often in the face and \u2026 it was pretty bad sometimes. I mean, our house would shake. Those walls would shake,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Twain said her mom, Sharon, and stepdad, Jerry Twain, \u201ckicked\u201d her and her sisters around while they were growing up. <span class=\"credit\">Today Show\/NBC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very traumatic. It gets loud and scary, like a really bad thunderstorm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The country icon said her mom repeatedly tried to leave her husband, but the family never managed to break free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother did often try to leave. She did leave \u2014 we did leave \u2014 but he\u2019d always find us, or she\u2019d always give in and go back,\u201d Twain said. \u201cIt was a cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Twain previously alleged that Jerry sexually abused her beginning when she was 10 years old. <span class=\"credit\">Shania Twain\/Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sharon divorced Twain\u2019s biological father Clarence Edwards when the future superstar was 2. She later married Jerry Twain, who adopted Shania and her sisters.<\/p>\n<p>Twain was just 22 when Sharon and Jerry were killed in a head-on car crash near Wawa, Ontario, on Nov. 1, 1987, as her music career was beginning.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cYou\u2019re Still the One\u201d singer has spoken about her childhood before, most extensively in her 2011 memoir \u201cFrom This Moment On.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the book, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/05\/shania-twain-claims-abusive-stepfather-would-fondle-her\/\">Twain alleged Jerry physically and emotionally abused her for years<\/a> and said she watched him repeatedly beat her mom.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Shania Twain embraces her sister Carrie Ann Brown at her Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony in 2011. <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She recalled one incident in which she hit him with a chair as he attacked Sharon before he punched her in the jaw.<\/p>\n<p>Twain also alleged that Jerry sexually abused her beginning when she was 10 years old, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2018\/apr\/22\/shania-twain-unexpected-return-freak-illness-country-pop-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian<\/a> in 2018, \u201cI feel the sexual abuse goes hand in hand with the physical and psychological abuse when it\u2019s somebody you know.
