The anti-establishment wave that swept through Democratic primaries in NYC last week has reached the Mountain West \u2014 and it may not end there.<\/p>\n<p><b>A dramatic night of results<\/b> in Colorado reached its climax shortly after midnight when 15-term Democratic Rep. <b>Diana DeGette <\/b>was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/01\/kiros-wins-colorado-house-primary-00983237\" target=\"_blank\">ousted by her 29-year-old challenger<\/a>, the democratic socialist <b>Melat Kiros<\/b>. The result marks one of the biggest upsets of the primary season, and puts Kiros on course to become (at least) the seventh DSA member of Congress next year.<\/p>\n<p><b>A changing of the guard:<\/b> \u201cFor decades Democrats have failed to meaningfully deliver for working families,\u201d Kiros told POLITICO\u2019s <b>Will Steakin <\/b>late last night following her stunning victory in Colorado\u2019s 1st Congressional District. \u201cWe have to root out the corruption and get money out of our politics \u2026 It\u2019s about political will \u2014 and that means we have to vote out any of the incumbents that are standing in our way by taking that kind of corporate PAC money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>So will she support Hakeem Jeffries as leader? <\/b>\u201cI\u2019m not supporting anyone for leadership who takes corporate PAC money,\u201d Kiros told Will. \u201cI\u2019m dead serious about this issue. We have to start setting a standard now.\u201d Twitch streamer <b>Hasan Piker<\/b> was at the Kiros victory party and warned: \u201cWe\u2019re not done yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>And there\u2019s more: <\/b>Veteran Democratic Sen. <b>Michael Bennet<\/b> saw his expected glide path to the Colorado governor\u2019s mansion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/30\/bennet-loses-colorado-governor-primary-00983357\" target=\"_blank\">blocked last night<\/a> by the insurgent candidacy of state AG <b>Phil Weiser<\/b>, who successfully cast Bennet as a D.C. insider doing too little to stand up to<b> Donald Trump.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>And there\u2019s <i>still <\/i>more:<\/b> Progressive candidate <b>Manny Rutinel <\/b>was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/30\/rutinel-wins-colorado-house-primary-00983300\" target=\"_blank\">overwhelmingly picked<\/a> by Colorado Dems over his more moderate opponent <b>Shannon Bird <\/b>to run in one of the most purple swing districts in America \u2014 Colorado\u2019s 8th Congressional District, currently held by Republican Rep. <b>Gabe Evans<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Make no mistake:<\/b> These are stunning results. Kiros was a PhD student and part-time barista with no political experience taking on a 30-year member of Congress who outraised her 2 to 1. Weiser was battling a three-term senator and former presidential hopeful who once chaired the DSCC. His victory leaves Bennet as the first sitting U.S. senator to lose a primary for governor in an open seat race in the entire post-World War II era (<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/admcrlsn\/status\/2072155432542408996\" target=\"_blank\">h\/t pollster <b>Adam Carlson<\/b><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><b>Even Sen. John Hickenlooper, <\/b>a former governor and Denver city mayor, saw his margin of victory over progressive challenger <b>Julie Gonzales<\/b> cut to single digits \u2014 despite outspending her almost 9 to 1, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/01\/colorado-primaries-democrats-fighters-trump-00983521\" target=\"_blank\">Will and POLITICO colleagues write in their must-read wrap of the night<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>So what\u2019s happening?<\/b> \u201cFolks right now are upset with the establishment, and they\u2019re looking for fighters who are going to stand up to Donald Trump,\u201d Rutinel told Playbook\u2019s <b>Ali Bianco<\/b> following his win in the battleground 8th District. \u201cThis is a deeply personal fight for me, as the son of a single mom. I know the struggles of working people, because that is my background. I will always fight every single day to make life easier for the working people of this district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Next stop, the Midwest:<\/b> Last night\u2019s results put to bed any suggestion that the insurgent wave that swept through New York last week was purely a metropolitan phenomenon. Attention will now turn to the left\u2019s next big targets this summer \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2026\/06\/27\/is-the-next-mamdani-in-michigan-00979090\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan Senate primary on Aug. 4<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2026\/05\/30\/swing-state-socialism-00943598\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin gubernatorial primary<\/a> the following week. Leftists also hope to see former Rep. <b>Cori Bush<\/b> \u2014 another prominent DSA member \u2014 back on the Democratic ticket in Missouri\u2019s 1st Congressional District this fall. (Missouri\u2019s primaries are also held on Aug. 4.)<\/p>\n<p><b>While the left is thrilled <\/b>by its succession of victories, Republicans are rubbing their hands together. These results ensure the Democratic Party\u2019s supposed leftward shift \u2014 whether real or perceived \u2014 will be cemented as <i>the <\/i>central GOP talking point in the four-month sprint to the midterms.<\/p>\n<p><b>Rutinel was the immediate target <\/b>for the GOP machine last night, given the tight district he\u2019s vying for. \u201cThe socialism train that started in New York City stormed through Colorado last night, and its newest passenger is radical far-left vegan activist Manny Rutinel,\u201d NRCC spokesperson <b>Zach Bannon<\/b> said. \u201cIn November Coloradans will reject his radical agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Online, however,<\/b> MAGA influencers are chiefly targeting Kiros, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/greg_price11\/status\/2072134420673261706\" target=\"_blank\">sharing an interview clip<\/a> in which she said the 9\/11 terrorist attacks were \u201cinevitable, in the sense that [America] destabilized a lot of the Middle East, and that forced people to believe that another act of violence was the only response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Expect Trump<\/b> and other senior Republicans to weigh in later today, seeking to tar the entire party with the \u201cCommunist\u201d tag that he\u2019s deployed in recent weeks. How effectively Democrats rebut these attacks will go a long way to influencing the outcomes of November\u2019s most marginal races, given the success Trump had in 2024 in framing his opponents as the \u201cradical left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>The progressive pushback:<\/b> \u201cThere\u2019s nothing radical about making sure that folks have affordable health care, that they have food, that they don\u2019t have gas prices that are going through the roof,\u201d Rutinel told Ali last night. \u201cThat is the focus of this campaign \u2014 making sure that working families across this district are able to make ends meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>This is the Zohran Mamdani playbook<\/b> writ-large \u2014 focus relentlessly on the cost of living and ignore the Republican jeers. Expect to hear this reaction again and again from these new leftist Dems. \u201cVoters just want to live dignified, secure lives,\u201d Kiros told Will. \u201cIf we can deliver for that, any attacks that come from the Republicans are just going to ring hollow to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>But moderates are less sure. <\/b>Jeffries said last week that he and Mamdani \u201cagree to strongly disagree\u201d about the candidates the NYC mayor has endorsed. Sen. <b>Richard Blumenthal <\/b>(D-Conn.) has said any effort to \u201cnationalize\u201d what happened in New York \u201cis going to fail.\u201d This struggle between left and center, between establishment old guard and insurgent new, is fast becoming <i>the<\/i> Democratic storyline of the summer.<\/p>\n<p><b>LOOKING AHEAD:<\/b> As Jeffries spearheads Dems\u2019 mid-decade redistricting drive, the left\u2019s string of wins in last week\u2019s NYC primaries raise a question about how the establishment could strike back, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/01\/the-left-won-big-in-nyc-now-it-has-to-survive-a-redistricting-effort-00983202\" target=\"_blank\">POLITICO\u2019s Joe Anuta reports<\/a>. \u201cCome 2028, when New York officials hope to redraw those three seats along with the rest of the state\u2019s congressional boundaries, Jeffries would be one of the people influencing the process. DeSantis, who wrote and promoted a memoir on the eve of his unsuccessful run for president, announced on a video call with supporters yesterday that he was selling a revamped version of \u201cDreams from our Founding Fathers,\u201d the first book he wrote shortly before he ran for Congress in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><b>DeSantis is selling 1,776<\/b> signed and numbered copies of the book for $250 a copy from a new website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desantis1776.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">dubbed DeSantis1776.com<\/a>. DeSantis said the book will come with a new introduction but he contended his criticisms of <b>Barack Obama<\/b> and \u201cthe left\u201d still have resonance. On that same video call with supporters, DeSantis sidestepped audience questions about his political future after he leaves office in January.
