Manuel, 58, was reportedly also notified that Churnside ignored trainers\u2019 medical advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Churnside received \u201cat least two formal warning letters\u201d about her behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Us has reached out to Churnside and the University of Michigan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhile there are improvements to be made, Warde consistently and appropriately engaged and shared information with professionals in the athletic department and within the university, including his supervisors and the Board of Regents,\u201d Manuel\u2019s lawyer, <strong>Matthew Schenk<\/strong>, told <i>The<\/i> <i>Wall Street Journal<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Churnside was hired by the University of Michigan in August 2022. She abruptly \u201cresigned\u201d from her position in March 2026 without any mention of the allegations made against her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe water polo program has become part of who I am because of the incredible young women and staff I had the privilege to work around every day,\u201d Churnside said in <a href=\"https:\/\/mgoblue.com\/news\/2026\/3\/9\/u-m-athletics-announces-coaching-change-for-water-polo-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement<\/a> at the time. \u201cI\u2019m so proud of everything we built together, and even more proud of the strong women behind it. I\u2019m looking forward to new opportunities and new challenges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Manuel added in his own statement, \u201cWe want to thank Cassie for her efforts, and we wish her the best in her future pursuits and endeavors.
